I got some time today so I quickly redrew Judar's hair ^^
I'm getting more used to drawing the shape of his hair
I like the clearer shapes now! My fave is the 4th one, then the 3rd one
Scrapped the 5th and 6th ones cuz they don't have very clear shapes to me.
Hand is tentative though I'll probably redraw that
I'm very amazed by how people draw silhouettes and even quickly render using the lasso tool...
I tried the lasso tool method out for making silhouettes because I was bothered that I couldn't get the shapes I wanted at first, so I quickly lasso'ed the shapes of his hair spikes and kept repeating.
This gets made even easier when you have "Add to selection" turned on on CSP (or any similar function)
Admittedly I'm MUCH better at sketching with lines (which is how I always sketch), than blocking out silhouettes with a big brush and erasing from it to make shapes.
Because the 2nd was done with lasso tool, it has some jagged edges (though Ig you could turn Anti-aliasing higher) and has some unbalanced spikes, but it actually helped me get the shapes I wanted much faster for me.
Making silhouettes with lasso tool is fun... I then put the lasso tool version on low opacity, and re-sketched over it (3rd and 4th image)
I was wondering whether to post on side or main but it'll probably get buried under my reblogs and ramble posts since I don't have a solid art tag there
And Tumblr's search function is so finnicky that some of the tags don't work when you search them, so I'll put it here
Once I get the chance to draw Alibaba and refine the rest of it, I'll put it under tags
I love the improvement from my late 2024 - early 2025 style where I've shifted into drawing more thickly lined eyes ^^

The idea I had for the 1st one was Judar clutching onto Alibaba's sleeves.
Then for the 2nd one, I thought of Judar yanking on Alibaba's rope cord accessory playfully to pull him closer to his face. Like a cat batting at rope ๐โโฌโ๏ธ
For the 1st one I did not think through how his bangs partially covers Alibaba's face...
I usually draw one chara, then draw the other.
Thankfully, I thought it through with the 2nd one โ๏ธ
The way his hair and eyes are lined, is so nice, I love it... ๐คญ

Rahhh I keep thinking about that sketch Ohtaka made of him wearing changshan and hanfu... Her sketches are so fluid. Her art is so dynamic.
Me: Judar is wearing Indian/South Asian clothes in his canon design, but the series calls it "Middle Eastern" clothes ๐ญ
Also I just don't want to draw the bastardized/racially stereotyped outfits in Magi, so I'll be proceeding with my HC versions and redesigns instead.
I also love Miaojiang fashion's inspiration from Indian clothing (with the Silk Road elements)
It's why I opt to draw Judar in hanfu/huafu instead in my HC versions to project his ethnicity more on his design. He is from the Kou Empire, so he is Chinese coded.

Since it's summer I should eventually get on the grind of translating JuAli doujinshi and KuroEne's old Pixiv Logs/Twitter Fanarts ๐
I have 15+ JuAli doujins in my hands (mostly SFW, but a few are NSFW), because I bought them from secondhand resellings
I imagined that most JuAli doujins were made during the time while the Magi anime was airing
I have at least 90% of KuroEne's fanarts saved from back then (mostly SFW, but there's some NSFW)
For KuroEne, most of them are mainly fanarts from 2012 - 2016, but there are some from 2017 - 2020+
I got into KagePro and KuroEne when I was like 12.
Kid me was a master archiver that saved most of their fan-works ๐ซก
Since I tend to gravitate towards niche popular ships (ex. LimGuda) and rare pairs (ex. JuAli, KuroEne, XanLena, IdaTatsu)
I was so pleasantly surprised that 2 of my biggest OTPs ever have old NSFW doujinshi like OMGGG
I'm so shocked about the existence of a few JuAliHaku (NSFW) doujinshis like I am winning โ๏ธ I have a few of them!
KuroEne had a bunch of NSFW logs back then that I archived
Though, ofc, I understand the gray area of translating the works of artists who are not in the fandom anymore and/or deleted their accounts.
I'll make it more discrete by making a Tumblr post and then linking to one of my public Notion pages.
I first got exposed to fan-doujin culture through KHR, so Ik there's tons of doujins that I would've never gotten to read if it weren't for fan-translations.
Especially since KHR had a really active doujin scene, and was most active during the mid 2000s - early 2010s. KHR was renowned for having one of the biggest doujinshi counts at the time
I have over 20+ LimGuda doujinshi (assumably 20 - 25), but LimGuda's artists are very active in the fanbase, so I won't post them publically to respect their wishes.

Though she was wondering if there would be people that would contribute to it. I think I did see some people interested.
She said that if she does put one together, then it'd be for an in-person Magi doujin event in Japan next year.
(Anthology = Collab fan-book/doujinshi where artists and writers contribute illusts, comics/manga, and fic, etc.)

Because I can't really predict what my schedule will be like next year.
I feel like I'd probably get really busy due to IRL/school (which is why I'm a lot more active rn)
My posts and posting frequency will definitely slow down a LOT once school starts up again for me.

Ok let me explain this for people who are curious.
For example, general Japanese Twitter etiquette between fan artists is generally polite.
This is popular on Japanese SNS
When youโre not mutual follows with someone, often JP artists will send a tweet to the other person like FFๅคใใๅคฑ็คผใใพใ (Efu-efu-gai kara shitsurei-shimasu, โPlease excuse/pardon me, since weโre not mutuals [but allow me to make a comment]โ)
And it's also common JP artist etiquette to RT (Retweet) a person's post and then make a new tweet on your own account like:

EA fans usually use the A+B combo to say they like the charas' dynamic in general (can be platonic and/or as ship)
Sometimes, EA fans make up more unique ship names (that aren't portmanteaus of the characters' names) to refer to a duo (which can be used to say they like them generally as a dynamic, and/or as a ship)
For Judar and Alibaba as a duo (and JuAli as a ship), this fan-nickname is used:

It's short for ็้ไธญ (Chindou-chuu, "Incident filled journey; Strange journey")
The term means "A serious but comedic, light-hearted, incident-filled journey"

It's been a while since I last drew them!
