can you talk more about your latino alderaan headcanons!! ive been thinking that bc the planet is so huge and some alderaanian names sound distinctly french (i.e. verlaine) they traditionally speak a western romance dialect continuum with spanish as the standardized dialect
hi!! sorry it's taken me literally ages to answer this, it's been a very hectic few months for me xD
that's such a cool idea! when i write about alderaan i tend to take a lot more inspiration from latinoamerica than europe -- this is mostly just based on my own background & interests. really our only evidence of alderaan being hispanic or latino is the original casting of leia's parents, and the original stylistic influences of leia's buns, which to me both point towards latino influences.
i LOVE what you're saying about dialect continuums because yes, it would be absolutely ludicrous for an entire planet to speak the same language. (then again, star wars claims that almost everyone in the entire galaxy speaks the same language, so maybe ignoring linguistic diversity is canon typical...) i've sorta hesitated to sit down and figure out what dialects i think are spoken on alderaan / what leia might've grown up speaking, mostly just because i don't have a ton of faith in my own ability to come up with anything realistic lol.
admittedly that's sorta a fallacy because, regardless of "realism", the majority of star wars already assumes a WASP american perspective / cultural default. with that in mind i feel like it's kinda our responsibility to challenge those assumptions and bring in other perspectives, even if we do so imperfectly. so maybe i should write about leia's specific accent and how it absolutely 1000% would nail her as being the daughter of both the capital city and the mountains where bail grew up. maybe that's praxis, actually.
