I was thinking about this scene
from the RO trailer and how a lot of people think it’s a scene leading up to Bodhi’s death because it’s immediately followed by us seeing Bodhi run into a shuttle and then a shuttle exploding. The reasoning being that the look on Bodhi’s face here is deciding to die for a higher cause.
But what if this and the scene with Bodhi running isn’t that? What if what we’re seeing here is the moment Bodhi decides to join the Rebellion?
We know that Bodhi is from the planet Jeddah where most of the action of Rogue One takes place apparently and where the Death Star plans are, he was forcibly conscripted into working for the Empire which he does without much joy because he has no real choice. We also know that it is him that brings initial knowledge of the plans to the Rebellion.
So my thoughts were like this.
Bodhi learns about the Death Star, he doesn't have the plans or anything he just knows about it. He has no love for the Empire but haven’t really been working against it, he’s just a Joe Regular trying to survive in a galaxy where the Empire rules supreme. But this is something that really bothers him, a weapon that can destroy planets is waaaaay over his limit. But what can he do? He’s no Rebel and have no way of contacting them.
Enter Saw Gerrera and his guerrillas (possibly including at this time Baze and Chirrut). Now Saw is something of a wild card in the Rebellion and for one reason or another his team attacks Jeddah at this time. Bodhi is caught in the crossfire. He has a weapon, because technically he is Empire and supposed to fight along side them, but now has a choice to make. Here he does have the Rebellion or some sort of Rebels anyway, people who might have the means to do something about that weapon he knows about.
The conflict we see here is Bodhi deciding that he’s had it with the Empire, him giving up his life as a Joe Regular cargo pilot and beginning to become Bodhi Rook the Rebel instead. Of course he’s scared, he’s about to do something he never dreamed he would do, taking an active stance against the Empire.
The shuttle he’s running towards is one Saw and his forces have taken over. Bodhi is running into the unknown, into the arms of people who has no reason to bear him any love and yet he does because he can’t sit and do nothing anymore.
Written in part because @jedipilotstorm was looking for a Bodhi theory that did not involve him dying.
“He’d have been proud,” Karé said.
“Yes,” Poe said. “Yes, he would’ve been.”

Chirrut falls into the category of being a warrior monk. Although the Jedi are no longer around to protect the galaxy, he very much still believes in everything the Jedi were about. Baze Malbus is Chirrut's best friend. Heavily armored, he prefers a blaster to hokey religions and ancient weapons, but he is devoted to protecting his friend Chirrut at all costs.
