              The Athlife Foundation Awards: An Evening of Inspiration

With a breathtaking view of the D.C. skyline as a backdrop, the Key Bridge Marriot in Arlington, Virginia, was the scene of the 2015 Athlife Foundation’s Conference Awards Program on Thursday, July 16.  The Athlife Foundation was established as a non-profit organization whose aim is to educate, develop, and inspire student-athletes in the most challenged communities.  Working with schools, the Foundation strives to ensure that deserving student-athletes can achieve academically, garner the skills to succeed in post-secondary pursuits, and be prepared to compete in their future careers beyond sport.  It also assists schools in creating positive sport experiences for student-athletes through a platform that develops professional academic-athletic coaches, advisors, and mentors.

The event was hosted by Founder and Director, Jon Harris and Executive Director, Jeff McCann.  Their dedication and passion to Athlife and the student-athletes it serves were evident throughout the evening with the giving and receiving of awards and the variety of speeches.  Special Guest Speaker, M. Quentin Williams, Esq., inspired the audience with his own story that credited sports with keeping him away from illicit drugs that permeated the culture of his youth.

The dynamic evening brought together partners in the Foundation and recognized schools for their contributions and achievements.  The event also acknowledged two outstanding student-athletes, Darius Campbell and Ironelly Ozuma, who both received the Youth Inspire Scholarship Award.

The 2015 recipient of the final award of the night, the Athlife Youth Inspire Award, was Scotty McGee, formerly of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.  Scotty’s acceptance speech gave insight into how his brother’s death influenced his path in life.  It became clear to all in attendance that he had earned not only the Inspire Award, but the titles of Lifelete, Victim Advocate, and Force of Good as well.  His humble demeanor, abiding faith, and love for his wife, family, and community touched his audience, as evidenced by the standing ovation at the conclusion of his speech.  The humility, humanity, and sincerity displayed by Scotty and his wife were heartfelt to witness as they greeted every single person in a long line of well-wishers, and autograph/photograph seekers following the ceremony.

The Athlife Foundation prides itself in inspiring people for positivity.  It was apparent on this evening that their mission was a success.

Jeff McCann legendary San Francisco custom bike painter and master of intricate gold leaf work which decorated many of Arlen Ness' Diggers in the 70s and early 80s. In the 1990s Jeff painted award winning bikes for UK custom builder Battistinis from his base in Stockton California in his studio otherwise known as 'The Tortilla Factory'. Jeff was one of the Bay Area chopper building pioneers alongside Arlen Ness, Ron Simms and Bob Dron.

At one time I used to shoot a lot of bikes in my studio although I prefer bikes to be out in the landscape where they belong. 

This was a shoot for Battistinis Custom Bikes of Bournemouth England. They called this Sportster 'The Corsa'. The paint and gold leaf was by the renowned Jeff McCann who painted many of Arlen Ness' bikes.

I had the sky scene painted onto the studio background and gelled it for the sunset effect.

This shoot made the cover of Italian Freeway magazine issue 1 and was a bus stop poster around Italy.

The photos were also featured in VQ magazine.

The photos were taken on a medium format camera, Mamiya 6x7cm on Fuji Velvia 120 film.
