Being an avid Notre Dame fan, this article written by marketing mastermind Jeff Beals immediately caught my attention this week.
After reading this, I first thought of the old quote in sales “you’re not selling the product, you’re selling yourself.” This got me to wondering, how do people working in sales that are trying to maximize their commissions make each customer feel like one of a kind.
This particularly does not apply just to sales. You could relate this lesson to anything within the business world. One that comes to mind (since I am in the military) is recruiting. It is no secret that within the military, recruiters are seen as the cheesy used car salesmen. However, when first signing up for the military, they make you feel as if you are the best thing that has ever happened to the military, and you believe them. Then, once you have completed training and assigned to your unit, they may not even remember your name (a practice I do not recommend in the business world).
This lesson can also extend to our private lives. Isn’t it the guy in the movies, that spends all of his time, energy, and effort into courting the woman of his dreams the one that ends up with her in the end? Well at least for Hallmark movies!
For now, I will keep this lesson in mind after graduation while I am on the hunt for the perfect career, that satisfies my monetary, schedule, and self-fulfillment needs.
