#whyilovewomenartists: Nevertheless we vote
I’ve been a fan of artist Michele Pred’s work for sometime. I wrote about her amazing ability to integrate feminism, appropriation and humor in her work for TRIVIA: Voices of Feminism a few years ago.
As one of her amazing feminist acts of social justice, Michele Pred tomorrow presents “We Vote: An Artist’s Call to the Polls,” a parade in NYC ahead of the elections. More below; from press release submit via email. Amazing!
Michele Pred– Swedish-American artist known for her feminist/activist curated art parades led by a grand marshal and drum majorettes, inviting other artists to bring their politically motivated art into the streets. For her upcoming project, Pred is teaming up with The National Institute for Reproductive Health and Gun by Gun, who will be participating in the parade. Pred has also invited a variety of additional social justice organizations to participate including Black Lives Matter, Institute for Women’s Policy Research, NYSYLC and NARAL. "Ms Pred's work is an important offering for its relevance to the times" - Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor What/Why: On November 3rd, 2018, Michele Pred will bring her feminist art parade to Washington Square Park in New York City with a focus on the midterm elections.
Alessandra Modolfi - Vote 2018 (the individual letters are two-sided life size and will be carried by 4 people)
Designed to bring politically motivated art out of galleries and on to the streets, Pred’s parade is made up of artists that combine performance and activism with their portable projects. We Vote is the latest in a string of overtly political art actions that Ms. Pred has produced over the last several years; both individually and in collaboration with other artists.
In December 2017 Ms. Pred curated the Parade Against Patriarchy in Miami during Miami Art Week. For that iteration she invited women artists to participate. For the New York parade, the scope will be expanded to include male artists and their art. This event will be kid friendly and is intended to be fun and playful.
Where: Participants will gather in Washington Square Park in New York City. The parade will march through the streets, on route to Nancy Hoffman Gallery, 520 W 27th St, New York, the site of the artist’s VOTE FEMINIST exhibition. On view Oct 18 - Nov 24.
When: The parade will commence on Saturday November 3rd, 2018. Participants gather at 1:30PM, a group photo taken at 1:45PM, and parade start time of 2:30PM. Leading to the gallery as the end destination, participants will be welcomed to join a reception on arrival.
