I finally got a copy of Jeff Speck's "Walkable City!" I strolled through Brush Park on this beautiful 80-degree day and sat on one of the new benches at the park to read and enjoy the day.

Virtual Transsolar Project Day #2 | Guest Speaker: Jeff Speck

It's been a year since we last saw each other “in real life” on our bi-annual Project Day in Stuttgart. Then, we celebrated together into the night. It’s hard to believe this was only a year ago. For this year’s virtual project day, the organizing team created two rich program afternoons and evenings, which helped us all to bridge the distance.

The group overviews give insight into who works of what. The diversity of our projects, people, and prospects always leaves us feeling even more enthusiastic about what we do.

The future of Transsolar is another big topic. We met in small virtual groups and discussed; new goals were set, and responsibilities defined. CO2 is still a central topic in all projects and internally at Transsolar we not only discuss the level of knowledge, but also our position on the approaches to solutions. Can we advocate carbon offset, i.e. offsetting emissions that can be bought?

To draw a conclusion from a discussion, it helps to hear the perspective of an outsider. Dietmar Geiselmann, formerly a Transsolarian and now with the DGNB, summarized: There is no internationally valid definition of the term "CO2 neutral". Instead of concentrating on definitions, it helps to remain transparent in what you do and to show exactly what we mean by CO2 neutrality in the project. And new measurement parameters are needed, as we had also stated in the lectures. As an impulse, he gave us the opportunity to deal with the taxonomy of the financial industry.

Guest speaker on this project day was Jeff Speck. This driving force among city planners and urban designers works internationally for more “accessible” cities. He is the author of ‘Walkable City Rules: 101 Steps to Making Better Places’. In his lecture, however, he was not satisfied with denouncing of the negative development and extent of the "damage" that conventional urban planning has produced for decades; Jeff showed us strategies which are suitable for counteracting the "suburban sprawl", i.e. approaches which are suitable for dealing with the sprawl of the landscape and sprawling suburban development - and to plan more for the good of the people and thus also reducing the need for motorized vehicles. Transsolar Projekttag virtuell #2 | Gastredner: Jeff Speck 

Ein Jahr ist es her, dass wir uns „in echt“ gesehen haben beim Projekttag in Stuttgart und damals noch zusammen abends feierten. Unfassbar, dass es erst und doch schon ein Jahr her ist.

Das Organisationsteam hat für den nun zweiten virtuellen Projekttag zwei gehaltvolle Programm-Nachmittage und Abende gestaltet, bei denen man die Distanz fast vergessen konnte. Die Gruppenübersichten des aktuellen Stands, gezeigten, wer wo an welchen Themen arbeitet. Die Vielfalt weckt unsere Begeisterung – jedes Mal.

Die Zukunft bei Transsolar ist ein weiteres großes Themenfeld. In virtuellen Kleingruppen trafen wir uns und diskutierten über, neue Ziele wurden vereinbart und Verantwortlichkeiten festgelegt. CO2 ist nach wie vor zentrales Thema in allen Projekten und Transsolar-intern diskutiert man nicht nur den Wissenstand, sondern auch unsere Haltung zu den Lösungsansätzen, was wollen wir erreichen? Können wir CO2-Offset, also käufliche Kompensation von Emissionen befürworten?

Um ein Fazit aus einer Diskussion zu ziehen, hilft die Sicht eines Außenstehenden zu hören. Dietmar Geiselmann, vormals Transsolarier, jetzt bei der DGNB, fasste zusammen: Es gibt keine international geltende Definition des Begriffs „CO2 neutral“. Statt sich auf Definitionen zu konzentrieren, hilft es bei dem eigenen Tun transparent zu bleiben und genau aufzuzeigen, was wir jeweils in dem Projekt unter CO2 Neutralität verstehen. Und es brauche neue Messgrößen, wie wir das auch in den Vorträgen festgestellt hätten. Als Impuls gab er uns mit auf den Weg, uns mit der Taxonomie der Finanzindustrie zu beschäftigen…

Gastredner dieses Projekttags Jeff Speck kann man als Impulsgeber bezeichnen. Der Stadtplaner und Urban Designer setzt sich international für mehr „begehbare“ Städte ein. Er ist Autor des Titels ‘Walkable City Rules: 101 Steps to Making Better Places’. In seinem Vortrag begnügte er sich aber nicht damit, negative Entwicklung und Ausmaß der „Schäden“ anzuprangern, die herkömmliche Stadtplanung seit Jahrzehnten hervorzubringen vermag, sondern er zeigt Lösungsstrategien auf, die geeignet sind, dem “suburban sprawl“ entgegen zu wirken, also Ansätze, die sich eignen der Zersiedelung der Landschaft und ausufernder Vorstadtbebauung zu begegnen – und zum Wohl der Menschen zu planen und so auch die Notwendigkeit von motorisierten Fahrzeugen zurückzuschrauben.
