hamlet for the ask thing

Why I like themI relate to him in a lot of ways, I appreciate his conflict, his emotionality, his gift for words, and the way that he seems to think he’s more in control than himself than he is.  I love that his first want in the whole play is to just go back to Wittenberg where he felt safe and happy. I love how dynamic he is and how effected he is by everything, and how intensely he feels.  Also, he’s kind of a smartass, I dig it.  I really love Hamlet, ok.

Why I don’tHis treatment of Ophelia is my primary issue with him. Also, I love a character who does against their family, but I don’t love that is has to be out of loyalty to another blood relative.  I’m pretty anti-blood based loyalty, so. Shrug.

Favorite episode (scene if movie)Assuming scene here, because it’s a play? Act II, Scene II. “Words, words, words” is the fucking best. Or Act III, scene II.  His antics at the play are fascinating.

Favorite season/movieI’ll take this to be favorite movie adaptation?  For Hamlet specifically as a character, either the David Tennant version or Kenneth Branagh version.

Head CanonHamlet and his father were not necessarily close in life.  I think there was a lot of expectation and obligation heaped between them that made things difficult to be truly close.  Also Hamlet Sr. is a warrior, and Hamlet is a scholar.  There may have been some tension.  I like to think he loved and admired him, but they didn’t always get along.  A lot of Hamlet’s need to avenge him is kind of compensatory for lost time, for not having, in his own mind, loved him well enough in life.  And an urge to prove himself a proper son, perhaps too late.

Unpopular OpinionI don’t know that I have any unpopular Hamlet opinions?

A wishHamlet had been able to go back to Wittenberg with Horatio. This mess would have been better.

this has been a really tough couple of years, health wise; I’ve not been able to go to school, and just generally been in pain, but I’ve never been more proud of who I am and I’m working on making the best of what I’ve got.
