Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw's slowly rotating mountain of ice cream, topped by cascading drips of chocolate syrup, rainbow sparkles, and two maraschino cherries, underscores the fine line between splurge and excess. While highlighting a collective love of indulgence, the towering, gooey dessert also hints at the darker side of overconsumerism—in all of its forms.

Now on View: Brooklyn artists Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw have transformed ordinary things, a bathroom sink and an ice cream sundae, into spectacularly oversized sculptures. The monumental scale of these works suggests a celebration of our consumer culture—one that includes access to running water and indulgent treats—and at the same time, a more dystopic version of the American Dream.

Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw are primarily makers of objects, which are sometimes incorporated into performances that are playful and entertaining while making pointed cultural and political commentary. The brown steady stream of brown water flowing from this gigantic version of a pristine porcelain bathroom sink suggests pollution—a major ongoing problem that plagues water supplies globally and for which there is no immediate solution—as well as larger concerns about resource overconsumption.

The huge hot dog sculpture in the middle of Times Square is coming back later this month

And, to be frank, we can't wait.

Hot Dog in the City in Times Square

If you find yourself in Times Square between now and June 13th, you can see a 65 foot long hot dog on Broadway and W. 46th Street. The giant hot dog sculpture is the creation of artists Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw and is called “Hot Dog in the City.” Each day just before noon, the hot dog is elevated towards the sky, and a burst of confetti shoots out of the tip of it at 12PM.

I captured photos of the hot dog after the Midnight Moment on Friday, May 10th and returned before noon on Wednesday, May 22nd during my lunch break to create the photos in this gallery.
