Don’t even joke with me I love them so much
JENNIFER-LYNN HAYDEN/JADE + KYLE’S LAP
I just wanted to talk about this whole proposal scene because I actually like this scene a lot (this whole issue to be honest). I tried to make my thoughts as coherent as I could, but I probably didn’t do the best job with it because my thoughts about this scene is just kind of all over.
First of, I love that the rejection was kind of dealt with so smoothly. That a failed rejection because of some reason or other (in this case, proposing way too soon) doesn’t necessarily mean the relationship / friendship / communication must be stilted and end.
I love how much their friendship really shines through in this whole scene. They’re not just lovers here, they’re very clearly friends who can make jokes with and tease each other, even if sometimes they’re a little petty (Kyle) or insensitive (Jen) towards the other. The most important thing that is very precious to me is just the complete lack of power dynamic here.
Like in a normal circumstance, proposing with the Green Lantern ring could so easily have been a “bad” thing with it possibly seeming like the Green Lantern gig is conditioned on her marrying him which would be Extremely Bad. But the thing is, with their friendship and everything, it is clear that there isn’t even a little bit of such a hold. Jen isn’t afraid to reject him. She’s not afraid of losing him as a friend or as a lover or of losing the Green Lantern ring.
She teases him a little about proposing with a ring he got from Batman, and Kyle teases her a little about keeping it or returning it, but it’s clearly entirely joking and he gives it to her very willingly anyway. He doesn’t hold it over her although he probably could and I’m just obsessed with the lack of power dynamic. It’s not even really a question that she gets to keep the ring, she doesn’t even consider it until Kyle jokes about returning it or wearing them both as cufflinks or earrings (by the way, someone please draw Kyle with two Green Lantern rings as earrings, it would be funnnn), and even then her bargaining is very playful - “No, I want it. Can I, please? I wanna be a Green Lantern again” and “C’mon-- gimme”. She’s doesn’t seem even the slightest bit worried that she might not get to keep it. (In a similar vein, Kyle’s also not afraid to ask / bargain “Things are so good. Jen, please.”)
(I don’t know why they wrote the issue this way but this whole tie-in made the “not yet” seem like “not ever” to me somehow. They’re just genuinely one of those that give me better off as friends type of relationship in my opinion.)
((Also Jen’s rambling while unsure of how to respond is just my internal monologue 70% of the time I look at Kyle: “You angel... You are a loving little angel... You are my sweet, beautiful, brave, incredibly stupid, stupid, man.” Nothing will ever describe him as well, ever.))
(((Completely off-tangent: I just noticed the newspaper says “Luthor Vows to Low...” what? What is Luthor lowering?)))
Give him a break… please he does not want to see you two doing that.
Go my mech au jenkyle !!!
