did you hear about the new show redrum jenna bans is producing... they have my attention... would prefer good girls to not have been cancelled lmao but. they have my attention.

I hadn't heard about it yet, anon, but oh my gosh, that sounds like so much fun! I'm delighted by Jenna producing and Carla Banks-Waddles showrunning too. Carla wrote some of my favourite eps of Good Girls 2.05, 2.09, 3.02, 3.10, and 4.06 (!) Show description below if other people are interested too :-)

Redrum is described a sexy, swampy dark dramedy/thriller about two best friends — Jess and Sadie – who host a podcast about New Orleans’ most infamous serial killers. But when they make fun of the wrong sociopath and people close to them start to turn up dead, our friends, who are grossly ill-equipped for this unfortunate circumstance, realize they have to do what the police haven’t: find the killer before they become the victims of their own story. Let the good times roll.

I was recalling Krebs and Bans interview where they said in season 4 Beth would have a realization why her and Rio couldn't have a long-term relationship or something along those lines but upon watching it...I don't see that epiphany. What do you think it is? Or is it even there at all? 🤔

Tbh I don’t really see it either. I mean, you could argue that it’s must be when Rio threatens her family after she chooses him in 4.07, or when he kidnaps Annie in 4.13, but I don’t actually think we saw Beth fully entertaining the idea of being with him, so I definitely don’t remember a spot where I felt she came to this conclusion. In fact, I think her arc over the season was about repairing her relationship with Rio, and it ended quite hopeful and optimistic, so I’m not really sure where she was supposed to have that epiphany! If she did have it earlier on, it didn’t seem to be something front-of-mind for her by the end of the season.

I never write anything about Good Girls on here but...

This episode made me uncomfortable from start to finish. There wasn’t a scene, in regards to Beth, that I would personally call “good television”. 

Beth Boland’s character introduction is a housewife and a stay-at-home mom doing what she believes needs to be done to keep the roof over her childrens’ heads, however, over the course of two seasons she obtains liberation from those square pegs she forced herself to fit in. Cut to season three episode three where the writers’ decided to turn the very thing that had stripped her of her agency and identity into her literal lifeline. Pregnancy. And I hated it.

I’ve never been a fan of watching two characters have sex on TV where one or more of the participants clearly don’t want to be there(I got turned off years ago from a Grey’s Anatomy episode where Meredith and George had sex and Meredith literally breaks down in tears). I understand Beth made a choice to seduce Dean but when you have your lead character engaging in sex she wouldn’t be having if death wasn’t literally on the other side of that line then it moves into gross territory. She couldn’t even fake an ‘I love you’ to the man. But it’s all okay if it gets packaged up and sold as comedy.

Then the scene at the clinic. Yikes. It’s one thing to have her in a clinic with the man threatening her life, it’s a whole other thing to have him in the room with her where she’s practically naked and vulnerable. It just felt wrong to me. 

What would’ve been more compelling to me? A conversation.

A brutal, gut-wrenching conversation where Beth and Rio talk( or shout given the nature of the conversation they would’ve been having). Nail biting, intense, high-stakes, emotional dialogue encapsulating the fallout of that night. One where Beth actually describes that night and what was going through her head from the second someone put a bag over her head and abducted her. One where Rio explains why he decided to play that night out the way he did.One where Rio talks about the four months of recovery and his boy. One where Beth talks about her guilt and confusion.

This pregnancy shit? Wasn’t it. It wasn’t comedic, it wasn’t clever, it wasn’t compelling, it wasn’t smart(especially since Rio knows Beth just invited Rhea out for drinks????). It was just gross. Gross. Gross. Gross. From trying to get pregnant with a man she doesn’t love anymore to save her life to Rio looming over her in a clinic which should be a safe space for women. 

For a show that advertises itself as a feminist commentary or female empowerment this episode was anything but. Your lead character’s uterus shouldn’t have been written as a shield, instead find a way to write her where she’s capable of using her surroundings or her business as one.

The way Jenna Bans still talks about the Dean Beth relationship makes me cringe,like no one cares for it, how off base can you be? I will never forgive them for wasting all this screen time on this stupid hitman storyline and Death. Even if they have them finally separated in a potential season 4,I think its just too late,that should have happened already a long time ago.

I honestly don’t get it. If they’re listening to feedback they have to know that everyone hates Dean and that relationship. And why paint such a broad picture of what a terrible husband, father, and man he is to try and redeem him all of a sudden? And without actually having to face consequences for anything he’s done? Beth was practically a doormat for him this season (and part of last season). No one wants a “triangle” between Beth/Dean/Rio. Beth needs to kick him to the curb. And guess what? Matthew can still be part of the show! Just bc they get a divorce doesn’t mean he can’t be, but definitely in smaller doses. Which would do the show some good. I know some people who have quit watching bc they hate Dean so much. Why keep continuing to push him and that relationship? And then to KNOW how popular Rio is and to keep giving him 2 minutes of screen time an episode and no character development whatsoever is disheartening.

So I have decided to give Miss Jenna and her team a “vacation” and write the next season of Good Girls. I’m going to get this whole series back on track. There will be conversations that are long overdue. More Marcus, flashbacks, More POC characters, Rio background, resurrections (Eddie), blood, sweat, and no more white tears. Don’t worry y’all I got this.
