Valentine is the debut novel from Elizabeth Wetmore and a #botm pick. I did the audiobook. “It’s 1976 in West Texas. Odessa is in the midst of an oil boom. One night 14-year-old Gloria gets in the truck of Dale Strickland, an oilfield worker. He drives her out into the desert and brutally assaults and rapes her. In the morning she stumbles for shelter at the only house she sees. Dale is arrested. But not everyone wants justice for a young Mexican girl...” So many things to make you angry here 😡 The misogyny - the blatant disregard for a young girl - the unwillingness to believe a witness because they’re a woman - not wanting women to work if they choose. There were some good parts - DA helping the young Vietnam vet get his truck back. And the hidden strength and backbone so many of the female characters showed. I liked the karma of the ending. And I appreciated Glory’s ending. Some tough parts to read in this book. Nice debut from Wetmore.
