Dean's understanding - according to Jensen - apparently stopped evolving when it was explicitly stated in season 7 episode 21. This line is about Castiel. Full stop.

and that's fine - that is a valid, romantic, heartbreaking interpretation and headcanon for the character. It's one that fits the narrative perfectly.

However - it doesn't mean that Cas didn't love. it doesn't mean that Cas wasn't capable of love. It only means that Dean didn't understand that Cas did love him.

You are the most selfless, loving human being I will ever know. You know, ever since we met, ever since I pulled you out of Hell... Knowing you has changed me. Because you cared, I cared. I cared about you. I cared about Sam, I cared about Jack... I cared about the whole world because of you. You changed me, Dean. I love you.

Castiel changed. and everyone who watches, sees it.

The angel was becoming human. The angel was in love. The cowboy didn't see it. Didn't think he could dare hope that it was possible. No one asked Jensen if he thought Dean loved Cas.

Jensen said he wasn't playing Dean as knowing Cas loved him. food for thought.

Idk how to explain to you how queercoded and sexuality charged classic horror was. That the monsters 'devouring' the damsel had a sexual energy sondhiem referenced with the big bad wolf.

That Dean is female coded in a genre where the monsters were after the damsel.

John Jo's father as bait. Jo became bait. John used Dean as bait in s1 & precanon. Sam used Dean as bait. Dean even made himself bait.

Whether this was posing to turn tricks, or purely bait for a monster attack, in this genre that attack was inherently sexualized. It was immediately after the Gorgon scene. Yockey knew what he was doing. Of course this was cut.
