There was a certain monotony to the life of the 1%.
But as much as you hated how everyone simply just knew each other and their business — pretty much like a small, gated community, albeit a privileged, small, gated community — you couldn’t deny how much you enjoyed the lavish parties, the private jets and vacations, and even the dreaded and tacky polo matches between various families that came from old money.
Speaking of dreaded, tacky polo matches, today was the annual summer polo fundraiser match. A tradition started by the old business tycoons of the country that was eventually passed down to your generation.
Although you weren’t one to enjoy sweating underneath the scorching sun, you couldn’t miss the opportunity to buy new polo shirts from Thom Browne and Bottega Veneta and a pair of new riding boots from Alberto Fasciani, to see your polo pony and ride it, and of course, to catch up with some close friends.
You handed your empty flute of champagne to a waiter passing by before grabbing another one from the tray they were holding. You sipped slowly as you carefully watched the polo match that was currently unfolding in front of you. It was a seven-minute chukka meant to determine which team would be able to pick their respective opponents if they came out as the winner.
The referee blew his whistle, marking the end of the chukka. Jung Jaehyun’s team came out as the winner and therefore, he was in a position to pick out everyone’s opponents for today’s event.
You tried not to roll your eyes at how smug he seemed when he picked your team as his team’s opponent. You never understood why he enjoyed riling you up so much. For as long as you knew him, he’d be more inclined to annoy you especially on days where you decided to ignore him.
But despite the slight irritation you’d feel whenever he showed a triumphant smirk, you couldn’t deny how attractive that man was. You couldn’t ignore how his polo uniform fit him so perfectly, how the beads of sweat seemed to glisten over his tanned skin, his red tongue poking out of his–
Whoa, that was enough of your head being in the gutter. You could already hear your friends snicker at your lack of subtlety.
“Careful,” Seulgi sang, “or you two might just have to skip your match to have a little quickie in–”
“Don’t even think about finishing that sentence, Kang Seulgi,” you warned her with a small huff, even if her words spoke the truth.
“Please, we all know what’s going to happen between the two of you when your match ends.” Jennie snorted.
You were about to retort back when a tenor voice cut into your conversation. “And what exactly is going to happen between the two of us when our match ends, hmm?”
Really, if you were to get a dollar for every time you rolled your eyes at Jaehyun, you’d probably be richer than Jeff Bezos and have your eyes stuck to the back of your head from rolling them so much.
“Buzz off, Jung,” you waved him away with a gloved hand. “Stay away from me until the end of our match.”
“Awn,” Jaehyun cooed. “Why the attitude, baby girl? Angry that we’re up against each other?”
You scoffed loudly in a lame attempt to cover how flustered you were by the nickname he had given you. Why was he even calling you that in public?
“A-as if! You made us enemies. I never wanted this.”
“Enemies? Aren’t we being a bit over-dramatic today?”
At your deadpanned expression, Jaehyun smirked at you as he lowered his face to your level. “Oh, come on. It wouldn’t be our first time playing against each other and it wouldn’t be your first time losing to me either.”
You glared at him with crossed arms. “Please, last time I checked, our score was 50 to 49. And the 50 was for me.”
The male raised his brow with a lopsided grin. He really shouldn’t be looking this attractive, right now. “Care to have a friendly wager with me?”
Your lips pursed at his proposal, but you were confident that you and your team were going to win the upcoming match against him. “What do you have in mind?”
Jaehyun laughed at your question, his laugh sounding melodious to your ears. “If I win, then you will have to take some time off from work and go with me to Greece for two weeks.”
Your eyes narrowed. “Fine, and if I win, you’re taking care of the house chores for the next three months.”
For the first time, Jaehyun didn’t seem too confident. “It sounds like the bet is too skewed in your favour.”
“Awn, is someone scared of losing?” you provoked him with a teasing tone.
Your provocation seemed to have worked as Jaehyun shook your hand while sucking his teeth.
