Mason over Cotchery?
When I found out the New York Jets had released WR Jericho Cotchery, I was in a state of shock. This is by far the biggest gamble Head Coach Rex Ryan and GM Mike Tannenbaum are taking this year.
Derrick Mason is a great receiver, there is no denying that, but I don't think he will be right for the Jets. Yes, he is familiar with Rex Ryan, who coached in Baltimore for a part of Mason's career, but Rex was the defensive coordinator for the Ravens. The Jets run a totally different offense from what the Ravens run. So Mason is going to have to play catch up and learn a new system in a condensed mini-camp.
Cotchery has been a Jet for his whole career, and has become a great presence in the locker room. The team liked him, and he was a huge playmaker. Yes, his numbers fell this year due to injury, but he has insisted that he is back at 100% and ready to play. He was a reliable target, who would almost always come up in the clutch.
We will have to wait a few weeks to see Mason in action, but I am certainly scratching my head at this news. Hopefully this gamble pays off, but it certainly is an awful risk. But that is enough of my opinion? What does the sports nation have to say about the latest move by New York?
