The Moving Target, the first Lew Archer novel originally published in 1949. This is the 1959 Pocket Book paperback, with a cover by Jerry Allison.
Kenneth Millar used the pen name John Macdonald for the first time with this novel, and would later change it to John Ross Macdonald and then Ross Macdonald to avoid confusion with the author of the Travis McGee series, John Dann Macdonald.
Another name change occurred when the novel was adapted into a movie starring Paul Newman and Archer became Harper.

I think Jerry Allison came out the best. I like the way I stylized him. Especially in the eyes. His overall expression. I think it’s just a good reference pic.
