I’ve been thinking about this piece of Far Cry 5 concept art lately:

The character standing on the cage brandishing a book is clearly Jacob, and the old Eden’s Gate logo (with an eagle) on the white flag behind him suggests the image was created relatively early during the game’s development. This logo also appears in this picture (on the pulpit) or this one (the golden statue). The Eden’s Gate cross on the black flags, however, already has its final design.

This place looks like it could be the Baron Lumber Mill, there are two Eden’s Gate soldiers and many Judges, but what intrigues me is the presence of the people dressed in orange prison jumpsuits. In the game, Jacob’s prisoners wear their regular clothes, and while some are caged at the lumber mill, it seems “recruits” are usually trained at the Grand View Hotel or St. Francis. They are conditioned and forced to fight, but I’m not sure this kind of “trial” involving Judges is still a thing.

Since cult NPCs explain Judges are called that because they can detect sinners and won’t attack people who are worthy and righteous, I wonder if what we see in the image could be a form of “judgment”. It looks like the prisoner has been literally thrown to the wolves for them to decide if their soul is worth saving or not.

In Jess’ early biography, they also mentioned she “nearly lost her life in Jacob’s camps”, so is this what they looked like and what she’d been subjected to, at least in a previous version of the story?

We’re not used to seeing Jacob hold and, it seems, loudly preach about the Word of Joseph either because, while he has faith in the Father and is one of his Heralds, he mostly talks about his own beliefs in the game, so that’s interesting as well!

I don’t know, there’s something quite powerful, striking, and intriguing about this image to me, both in terms of the visuals and the story it seems to tell.
