"You Won’t Know" by Brand New
Brand New is another one of my all time favorite bands. I didn’t really get into them until my senior year of high school (the year Daisy came out) but as soon as I listened to The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me in its entirety, I was immediately drawn by everything about the album; from the songwriting, to the production, to the lyrics (which is surprising because I very rarely pay much attention to a song’s lyrics). It’s an amazing release.
The way the electronic noise slowly fades into the singer’s chopped-up yell in the intro right before the louder section is so unnerving. It sounds ghostly and un-human, almost like his inner pain is ripping its way out of him. It’s brief but it’s easily one of my favorite moments of the song. A similar effect can be heard in the outro before the singing resumes.
The faint, layered yelling behind the vocals in the louder verses really helps add a sense of relentlessness to the song. It’s not too much or too loud, but just enough to give it a touch of rawness.
I like how the little guitar part (on the left) in the beginning of the instrumental bridge locks up with the drums.
