Ghost x Soap | Doomed Yaoi | Part 2
Merman Ghost x Human Soap | Part 1 _______________________________________
Years passed, and somehow their friendship became something neither of them had meant to find.
It happened in pieces.
A shared fish left on the deck before dawn. A hand brushing scales without flinching. Storms weathered together, one above the waves, one below them. Laughter that came easier each season. Until one day Soap realized he wasn't sailing out to fish anymore.
He was sailing out to see Simon.
Soap learned every hidden cove where Ghost surfaced after sunset. The places no maps marked. Quiet inlets where the sea breathed gently against the rocks, hidden from passing ships and curious eyes.
If Ghost wasn't waiting there, Soap knew exactly which stretch of coastline to check next. Neither of them ever admitted they'd built a routine around the other.
One evening they sat together aboard Soap's fishing boat. The nets had already been hauled in. The day's work was done. The sunset painted the sea gold, turning Simon's silver tail into molten copper beneath the water.
Soap sat with his boots dangling over the side while Ghost rested beside the hull, arms folded on the butt of the boat.
For a long while neither of them spoke. They'd grown comfortable with silence.
Then Johnny broke the silence. "...How long?"
Simon kept his eyes on the horizon. "Six inches."
Johnny whipped around. "What?"
Simon looked genuinely confused. "You asked how long."
"I meant-" Johnny buried his face in one hand, already laughing. "I meant how long you'll live, ye daft fish."
Understanding crossed Simon's face. "Oh. About... three hundred years."
Johnny: "...Three hundred?"
Simon: "A little more, if I am fortunate."
Three hundred.
Soap had lived twenty-eight years. Not even a tenth of Simon's life. For the first time since meeting him... Soap felt temporary. Like driftwood beside a lighthouse.
Soap didn't realize he was holding his breath until the silence stretched too long. "Yer not going to ask how long-" He started, then stopped himself, jaw tightening like he’d walked straight into his own sentence.
"I know." Simon answered.
Johnny: "You knew?"
Simon nodded. "Yeah."
Johnny voice softened. "You knew from the start."
Simon repeated. "I did."
Soap let out a slow breath through his nose, something between a laugh and something more dangerous. "And you still-"
Still stayed. Still came back. Still looked at him like he was something worth returning to the sea for. He didn't finish it out loud.
Ghost didn't ask him to. The water shifted quietly around him, the tide tugging at silver scales. Ghost's gaze stayed on Soap, unblinking, unreadable in that calm, ancient way of his. "I am not good at leaving."
Soap huffed softly. "That so?"
"Aye." A pause. Then, quieter, almost like it slipped out despite him: "I will outlive you."
The words should've hurt more than they did.
Ghost watched him carefully, as if waiting for him to flinch, to argue, to finally do what mortals always did when eternity was mentioned, deny it.
Soap didn't. He swallowed once. "Aye..." He said quietly. "Probably will."
Soap leaned forward slightly, elbows on the railing again, voice rougher than he meant it to be. "So what? You just decided I’m worth… what, drowning your days on?"
Ghost didn't hesitate. "You are worth the time I have."
Soap's chest tightened at that. Stupid. Simple. Final. He looked away first, cursing under his breath. "You're a right bastard, you know that?"
Simon tilted his head up. "I have been told."
Soap shook his head, a smile threatening at the corner of his mouth despite everything. Then quieter, almost like he was afraid of the answer. "Doesn't it bother you?"
Ghost's gaze didn't move. "No."
No hesitation. No loophole. Just certainty, deep as the ocean under them.
Soap exhaled slowly, staring out at the water like it might give him something less dangerous to think about. "…Alright." He muttered. "Then I suppose ye're stuck with me till I sink." _______________________________________
