Jojo & Pyro ! :D
best friends of all time
It’s been over 24 hours since I watched episode 7 and I still can’t stop thinking about it. How much this both does and doesn’t change our understanding of Essek as a character. How much this explains how he gets to where he is when we meet him in the campaign. How much he has shut down and gone cold, and how much love and light and joy is still ahead in his future. (C2 spoilers ahead!!)
I think about the Essek we just saw at Fjord and Jester’s wedding. The Essek who herded Bells Hells like cats through Aeor in campaign 3. The Essek who cried over a failed resurrection of someone he didn’t even know at the end of campaign 2. The Essek who lives in a little cottage in Rexxentrum with someone else who shares the same sins, the same blood on his hands, and how tenderly and dearly they love each other. The Essek we just saw, on what was probably the worst day of his life, had no IDEA that this was coming for him. The Mighty Nein are going to hit this boy like a hurricane, and he’s completely unprepared for it.
I’m so excited to watch it happen again in this alternate animated universe. I’m so excited to see them catch him off guard, and to persistently befriend him. I’m so excited for Jester to Send goofy messages to him, and make him a parasol, and drag him kicking and screaming to being friends with all of him. I’m so excited to see him enter into a mutual-manipulation dynamic with Caleb only to discover with horror that he’s falling in love with him.
I think about Deirta, and that if she could see where he ends up, how proud she’d be. He didn’t become the Luxon-worshipping son she wanted, but he became better - and she knew he had it in him. She wouldn’t have given that last directive if she hadn’t believed there was a life ahead of him that was worth saving.
The Mighty Nein says clearly that everyone’s actions matter, and atrocities have consequences. It also says that redemption matters just as much, and that, no matter what you do, you can wake up one day and decide to be better. I think that’s beautiful.
The quickest doodle ever of Raccoon Essek. He's enchanted me ✨
