God calls us to be Perfect like He is Perfect, but its a difficult concept to grasp 100% of the time , sometimes we do very well with the people we like and other times we fail miserably with the people we cannot stand. I remember my first year of kindergarten (i only had one year of kindergarten as most people), torn between wanting to be in school and have fun yet not wanting to leave my mom. It was the year 1989, and as my mom stood at the door of the classroom as most parents did in tears. I was instructed to place my backpack in the box next to the teachers desk. And to sit where my name sticker was. 8 big letters, my name! I made friends but there was just some kids that i stayed away from, you know the booger eaters, and the ones that wanted you to help them with everything, or the ones who touched my crayons without permission. A clear tupper wear container with a white id with the words Rubbermaid underneath the permanent marker print of my name across the top. I wasn't a perfect kindergartener though. Secretly not as nice to the ones i didn't really like and overly nice to the ones I did. Story of my life.
There are times where I feel like the model Christ gave to us it totally doable and then there are times where I'm like what, the what? I can't do that Jesus, I don't know if i want to put myself in that position. Recently, I just graduated and like most recent graduates in this economy, I'm also looking for work. Probably in the toughest field right now...Media...There was about a week and a half ago where a good friend called and wanted a favor from me. She needed my assistance in furnishing a photographic portfolio for about 30 of her pieces. Let me tell you I felt so torn. Because personally I feel Jesus calls us to unselfishness in a lot of areas of our lives, and here I was declining to help her because financially it would be straining to do it. I teetered back and forth feeling a slight crushing in my soul for declining, yet at the same time I felt i was being commanded to just let peace be still in this situation and don't grieve myself more than i need to regarding this situation; but to stay concerned, and be sensitive. I called her this week and found that although she got someone to do a quick mock up for her (a person with less experience than myself, like 2% experience) it was no use to do the photographic portfolio because she changed her mind about the path she was taking because it would not help her finish her degree. In that experience I learned that although it is important to be sensitive, just because we are gifted and talented in a particular area does not mean we need to be doing it all, especially if we have been given peace about the situation.
