Following up immediately after yesterday's scene is this one. After Misato posits that the miracle of the Jet Alone shut down must have been set up, viewers are revealed to the truth: it was Nerv that set up the incident. This scene is an example of a complex shot flow where the visual and audio responsibilities are staggered. We still have a general formula of hook-expositionn-story-punchline. However some elements are taken out, and the visual and audio don't align all the time on which part they're on. Let's take a look. For the first shot, visually we have the exposition, foregoing the usual hook. Yet from the audio we do get our hook. Ritsuko delivers half of her line, and the resulting "Eva-01's recov–" hooks us into watching at least until the next shot. In the second shot, the visual and audio align as we visually continue to get exposition by re-establishing the interior of Gendo's office, and the audio exposits through dialogue that this is a briefing meeting. The third shot begins the story. The purpose of this scene was to convey that Nerv was behind the Jet Alone disaster. The visual has been moving us tighter over time, and this medium shot is visually perfect for the story portion part in this narrative. Audio-wise, Ritsuko also begins revealing to the audience that everything went according to Nerv's plan. Finally, the 4th shot. Visually it's totally a punchline with a close-up on Gendo. Yet the audio is still catching up, with Ritsuko finishing her line and completing the story before Gendo's punchline comes in. That the dialogue is distributed across the cuts really work to create a sense of continuity and make the cuts invisible. In fact, they threw me off so much, when cutting up the scene for this post, I struggled to cut at the right points, since the audio would confuse me into thinking that the shot wasn't over yet. It'd be interesting to re-edit this to see what would happen if the visual and audio cues were aligned. Generally Anno doesn't split sentences across shots, so it's unusual and intriguing to see him do it here. #庵野秀明 #hideakianno #jetalone (at Rockefeller Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp7Q4U_HQQL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=15whvo2vzr4zn
