In reality, I still don't have a serious idea what it's saying. But what I do know is that it's the sample.

This sample isn't one of the most well-known ones in the music industry, but it's sure known in the gaming community for its appearance in Teknopathetic from the 2002 video game Jet Set Radio Future, composed by Hideki Naganuma.

Jet set radio !

It all started when someone came across me listening to Sonic Rush’s soundtrack one day and said “hey man you should check out Jet Set Radio, it has the same music composer and shit”

For about two years, JSR was a thing that always lingered in the back of my mind and it was definitely one of those non-Sonic SEGA games I wanted to check out someday.

The 2012 re-release of the original came out, I was like “huh. cool. OH WAIT SA2 AND NIGHTS!? *spends all money on those instead*”

Then I came across this guy’s video.

Even though today watching this video makes me cringe (as it does for him; mainly due to most of these sample claims being incorrect), it was the thing that made me finally listen to the JSR soundtracks.

Have I ever played JSR or JSRF? Yes actually! …and the first time was as long as 9 months ago with JSRF. Pretty much loved it straight away, the music fit the game even better than I imagined, great level design, artstyle, characters, gameplay, the lot. It’s a really beautiful experience and probably one of SEGA’s best overall to me.

…Where the absolute fuck do I begin?

First, I’ll get this out of the way. Best JSRF track? Yes, probably.

Now onto the song itself.

Funky Dealer is a song that doesn’t slow down for shit. Literally as soon as the song starts, you’re thrown into the action and it stays the same way throughout the entire track, except for one bass solo that plays just before “PLAY SIX” is said.

It’s a perfect representation of typical hard funk. Messy drums (with a break very much like classics such as Amen Brother playing just before the song loops), horns, slap bass, dirty guitar, and very small vocals… most of the time.

Funky Dealer is one of the two Naganuma songs in JSRF (the other being Teknopathetic) to feature an entire speech’s worth of dialogue for one single sample. In this case, we’re looking at none other than the dealer himself.

The sample, originating from the Hollywood Edge’s Premiere Edition 14 sound effects library, features a middle-aged man with a New York accent, calling out dice throws for a game of craps. It’s just supposed to be used as background noise in a game, movie or whatever. That’s all. Nothing else!

But Hideki says “fuck that” and goes absolutely up the wall with it, somehow making it into one of his most popular songs of all time.

The song is just overall a beauty to listen to and is used fantastically in the game as well, being the very first track to play when you enter Dogenzaka Hill, the first area you explore during your skating-and-tagging adventure.

Stay funky, Mr… …well actually I don’t know who that guy is so I’m just gonna call him Mr Nineawinna. :V
