This is on the first page of Choosing a Jewish Life by Anita Diamant. It’s a quote that really resonated with me. I just finished reading this one today and definitely recommend it for anyone thinking about converting or their loved ones!

I bought "Find it in the Talmud" and I flipped open to a random page and got the entry "Exorcised the demons" and EVERY PART OF IT IS AMAZING: - demons made a barrel of wine explode - R. Mar b. Ashli heard that demons exploded a barrel of wine and said to himself, you know what I'm gonna do? Blow some horns at them. Trumpet time! TOOT TOOT DEMONS!!!!!! - the Rabbi is fed up and wants to know why the hell the demons did a naughty thing because "because they are demons" isn't enough of an explanation. - the demon explains that well what ELSE could they have done??? Someone put a barrel of wine on top of his ear, which was apparently under a drainpipe. - R. Mar b. Ashli basically is like "excuse you, you have no business being in PUBLIC LIKE THIS AT ALL. It is YOUR fault a wine barrel was placed on your ear because you have no right to even be here! You're the one in the wrong and have to pay for EXPLODING THE WINE BARREL!" - the demon and the Rabbi apparently agree to a payment plan because the demon doesn't have any cash on hand - surprising no one, the demon NEVER PAYS ANYONE BACK FOR THE DAMAGES and cites the fact that they aren't allowed to acquire things that can be tied, sealed, measured, or counted. - but demon, you say, the real payment could be the friendships you made along the way. ....or something. I mean I'm not sure what the point is here. Demons won't pay you back because they can't? Demons won't pay you back because they're broke? If a demon breaks your shit, you're screwed, even if the law rules in your favor? The appropriate approach is to use a loud trumpet and yell at it?
