jacktrevor will never stop being compelling, and it is simply because no matter how far away from each other they end up, their experiences will always be intertwined.
i don’t want it to be a me versus z thing ever. i think the media wants it to be like that, but, like, at the same time they gotta realize he’s one of my closest friends. i hope he has all the success in the world.
they look like twins out there, have you noticed?cole says they’re the most similar out of their friend group, too. goofy and dialed in. trevor very earnestly says he has always believed they are kind of the same person. they both want it so, so bad.
jack still holds every liney he’s ever had to The Trevor Zegras Standard. playing with bratter is easy because it’s like playing with z back at the program. a part of jack, confident as he is, still thinks he doesn’t have success if it’s not for trevor (or someone who feels enough like him) but trevor has alway known only one of them can get the glory. he goes on a point streak, jack tears his shoulder, they miss each other and it’s devastating (trevor’s words, of course, not mine). they’re never on the same page, but they can’t outrun each other.
and even though both of them have always known who the crown belonged to, jack isn’t fazed by the fact that he gets to hold all of it in the palm of his hand. he’d share his success with trevor as much as he shares it with his brothers. he’s the player he is because of trevor, he keeps believing that, long after trevor stopped thinking of them as equals.
the time difference back in anaheim was tough, it was hard for trevor to keep in touch with people, but he’s on record saying he talks to jack almost every day. about big stuff, little stuff. never about contract stuff, though. they’re both very firm about that. he protects jack enough from the ugly parts of his own career that jack can say to the media ‘he’s anaheim’s guy’ and genuinely believe it. even when things were already shaky. how could his guy not be the savior the ducks signed up for?
now, trevor might be sitting on someone’s couch, somewhere in philly, watching this game. probably with cam. maybe even with jamie. “hey, remember when…” but for trevor, thinking about those world juniors also means thinking about winning gold without jack.
the last time jack was toothless, trevor was with him. jack wanted him at the rock for playoffs so, so bad that trevor had no choice but to sit with jim and be obnoxious about that guy in the crowd that jackie hates. because of course, trevor has earned the family right to sit with jim and to call him by the nickname his brothers gave him. he watched him lose horrifically and then he stayed.
trevor stayed for the team’s end of the season party and his birthday. some brought girlfriends and wives, jack brought trevor. because jack always gets what he wants, and what he wants is trevor surrounded by a team who can go on a 13 game heater and beat their rivals in the first round of the playoffs, a team who likes each other. and then trevor went to montreal with him, went to michigan. one good summer, the last one before they get girlfriends and things get messed up. just the two of them.
trevor has a terrible year. probably shields jack from it. until this summer, he comes back home. sneakily posts a picture of their backs. jack hanging all over him. don’t have to stand that close to walk down the street, don’t have to have whispered conversations in public. but what can you do? our secret moments in a crowded room. he’ll never tell you how much he cares, or that’s what quinn says, but he does. he cares so fucking much. and god knows he loves trevor with everything that he has. they play each other more often, and end up missing each other again. trevor scoring with jack up in the press box, to make it sting.
and now trevor is watching him, his life completely uprooted from where they both began this journey, while jack has stayed the same throughout it all. and still, they love and support each other. because they literally can’t let go.
