BETTER
Sergio’s POV
She unlocked the door and stepped slowly, thinking I would not hear her. But I did and instinctively jumped out of the bed, running to her and embracing her from behind, lifting her up. She half-shrieked, then laughed as I moved in circles towards the bedroom and let us both fall on the bed. She continued chuckling as I was unribboning her coat, then pulling it off her, then working my cold hands under her fluffy sweater, my fingers trying to reach the hem of her bra. She slapped my arms, but had to dig her nails in my shoulders when my hands cupped her waist and lifted her up, adjusting her better on the bed. She gasped, her hands travelling through my shoulders to my hair, grabbing a handful of it. I stopped for awhile, watching her body curve under my touches and kisses.
‘What?’ I just smirked, tickling the skin above her navel. She moved her hand, in order to focus better on me, ‘What, Sergio?’
‘I want this to last longer than the usual. Leave him.’
She puffed, rolling he eyes. Grabbed my shoulders again, pushing me aside with all her strength and sitting on the bed, her legs folded under her. She tossed her hair back and shook her head.
‘We both know this is impossible,’ her fingers danced in front of me, in order to show me the blinking ring. I took her hand and sucked the finger with the ring. She smiled, patting me on the head with her other hand.
‘This is just a ring. Tell him you love someone else and-…’
‘How are you so sure I love someone else? Do you know this someone else?’
I smirked at her serious tone and look. Placed another kiss on top of her hand and moved towards her lips. She, however, was faster than me, almost bumping our foreheads into each other, her tongue running over my upper lip.
‘No matter how many nights I spend with you, Ramos, it still won’t be enough, you know…’
‘My insatiable Jillian…’
‘All your women are insatiable,’ she shrugged and rolled her eyes again. I laughed.
‘Jealous?’
‘Don’t say I don’t have a reason to be.’
‘And then… What should I be? You are even not mine. Not entirely mine.’
The silence fell upon us as she lowered her gaze, looking at her fingers in her lap, which she was now nervously playing with. She sighed and took a loud and deep breath.
‘We are getting married in two weeks.’
It was like she told me someone was dying. Someone close was dying. But then again, it was almost like that. I was dying. It was like she was running a knife through my heart and cutting me – not in half but in small, tiny pieces. Then those pieces, lying on the floor, were stepped on, kicked, shattered, forgotten.
Jillian was leaving for sure now; forever. I have spent so many days daydreaming about what she was doing with him, how she was touching and kissing him, what she was telling him. The jealousy was slowly and painfully killing me. But whenever she was unlocking the door and coming to me at night, I instantaneously felt into the oblivion of her fragrance and the unbelievable sensation of her skin over mine. She was about to leave now, letting the nights to be nights on my own – without the scent, without the skin, without the voice, the touch, the kiss. Without her.
I stood up, grabbing the hem of my shirt and wiping the non-existent sweat off my forehead. I bit the shirt and puffed, directing myself at the window. Felt her standing up too, approaching me. Her hands slid from behind, embracing me; her fingers drumming over my chest, drawing circles through the shirt’s fabric. She kissed my neck.
‘Don’t leave me, Jillian.’
I was fully aware I was looking like someone lost – like a desperate heart-broken teenager. But I was also aware that she did not know all the emotions she has given to me and all the feelings she would cause towards my destruction once she leaves, firmly closing the door behind her.
‘I can’t Sergio. We are getting married and moving to New York.’
‘New Y-…’
I gasped and coughed, shifting my eyes at hers. Entangled my fingers with hers and moved her hands away as I stepped aside.
‘You could have gone to Australia if you wanted to be so far away from me.’
She chuckled, raising a hand at me but I moved my face, ‘I am not running away from you, Sergio. I-…’
‘Have you ever loved me?’
The question – I knew – took her by surprise. She opened and closed her mouth several times, then shook her head and looked at the floor. I smiled, feeling my pulse dying inside of me. Took a deep breath.
Of course she did not love me. She was with him – she was to marry him. And who was I? The famous footballer she could always have some fun with and… that was it, really. This was our initial plan, after all. Sex. No feelings, no attachments. But somewhere on the road I got attached. Way too much.
She gripped my shoulders once again, trying to find my eyes and to look at them. Caught her smile slightly.
‘I am afraid that my answer would be totally against what we have initially planned.’
I got quite confused and looked at her. She pressed her forehead against mine, gently sucking my lower lip, cupping my face.
‘I know all your weaknesses, Sergio. And I fell in love with them,’ she brushed my cheeks with her thumbs, ‘Not with the God-like body, not with the salary, not with the unbelievable sex. I saw your flaws and still, decided with myself that you are the most perfect human being I have ever seen.’
I tried to say something but she kissed me quickly, making me instinctively wrap my hands around her waist and pull her closer to me. When she broke off the kiss, I snuggled at her, pressing my hair under her chin.
‘Don’t marry him. Be with me.’
She kissed my hair and brushed in gently. Kept silent for way too long, so I had to lift myself up and look her straight in the eyes. Was she hesitating? Was she thinking: maybe he is right, maybe I shall stay with him? Was she going to leave the other one for me? Was she even considering it?
I subconsciously smiled and she responded with the same.
‘You asked me whether I have ever loved you, right?’
I swallowed hard and looked away but she cupped my face again, making me look at her eyes.
‘I fell in love with you Sergio. After our first time, I was starting to get head over heels for you. But it’s useless-…’
‘Why? We still can be together. If you-…’
‘If I what? James proposed to me long before I met you. I said no.’
‘What?’
She kept silent, nodding slowly. Took a deep breath.
‘Yeah. I said no and the same day I met you for the very first time. And hence the initial plan. I knew James was the perfect man for me – a businessman, rich, stable, loving me… Maybe not in the way a husband should love his wife but kinda. A good friend. So on, so forth. But I didn’t love him – never have. That’s why I rejected him. Wasn’t sure whether I’ve made the right decision until I met you. And the plan of just sex was perfect for me. But… I fell in the trap, I guess.’
I cupped her face, looking at her lips.
‘There’s no trap here, Jill. We still can be together. Just tell me you want it. Just-…’
‘It’s too late.’
I pressed my forehead against hers even harder.
‘No, it’s not. Just one word.’
‘Sergio-…’
‘Starting great,’ I smiled and she did the same, her tears hitting her eyelashes as she blinked, desperately trying not to cry.
‘If you love me, we can be together.’
‘Do you love me?’
She lifted her eyes at me and a grinned, brushing our noses at each other.
‘More than anything in the world.’
‘More than your mom?’
‘Mhm. And more than football.’
She laughed and bit her lips, ‘If I tell you-… No, impossible. What would you do-…’
‘If you tell me this,’ I chuckled, grabbing her shivering hand in mine and patting it, ‘I would do something, I promise.’
She gasped, taking a deep, deep breath.
‘I love you.’
The next thing we heard was the rattling of her ring on the marble floor. Startled, she stepped back but I caught her again, pulling her by the wrist.
‘What? Sergio, please-…’
I smirked, gently slipping another glittering diamond ring on her finger.
‘Everything is better with me, you know,’ I leaned at her to steal a kiss.
