Dive Right In Chapter 1
“I told you to put on sunscreen…” Becca muttered before capturing the straw of her drink between her lips. Ana was nearly in tears across the table from her; from her head to her toes she was red, and not a light shade of pink. No, she was the same color of red as the strawberry daiquiri Becca was sipping on.
“I didn’t plan on taking a nap outside.” Ana snapped before squirming on the barstool beneath her. Only ten minutes after she had laid down on the lounge chair outside, she was passed out. Becca thought nothing of it, but after three hours, she went to go check on her friend. “Ow.” She whined, closing her dark eyes. “I hurt. Everywhere.” She raised her fingertips to brush across her shoulders, but she thought better, dropping her hand back to her lap. Ana looked miserable, even though she was sipping something sweet in the hotel bar, looking out to the beach. Anyone else would have been in heaven.
A little part of Rebecca was smirking; all day Ana had been begging Rebecca to come out and lay by the pool with her. Something in Rebecca said no, seeing that there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Instead, she opted to sit under the shade of the umbrella and catch up on some readings for class. Believe it or not, Rebecca hated taking vacations; she was far too busy with class and work to take a day off, let alone a whole week. But she promised Ana she’d try.
“Just go back to the room and sleep.” She offered kindly. “I mean, you won’t be able to dance at the club anyway, so it’s pointless to go.” Their first night here, and already things weren’t going as planned. Rebecca was beyond ecstatic to not be going out tonight. Bars and clubs were never her scene anyway, let alone with drunk Ana.
Ana shook her head, wincing as the sensitive skin on her neck moved. “No, we came here to party—“
“No, we came here to relax,” corrected Rebecca. “Seriously, I won’t be upset if we have a quiet night in.”
Ana groaned and took a sip of her drink. Gingerly, she rested her elbow on the bar top and cupped her chin in her palm. She sighed, lightly humming as she attempted to relax. Her eyes were closed and for a few seconds, Rebecca honestly thought she was asleep.
“Check please.” She silently waved the bartender over. He nodded and grabbed the girls’ checks. “Keep the change.” Rebecca politely smiled, handing him a few bills. “Ana?”
“How come we haven’t seen any cute boys?” She asked, suddenly opening her eyes. Rebecca raised an eyebrow and stared at her friend. “Seriously, it’s spring break, were are all the cute boys?”
“I have no idea.” Rebecca mumbled. Boys were usually the furthest thing from her mind. “We need to get you in bed—“
“No,” Ana whined. “I wanna go out.”
“Tomorrow. You’re redder than a lobster. Stay in tonight, get energized and we’ll go out tomorrow, I promise.” Rebecca ordered sliding off the bar stool. “Come on, let’s go to bed. I’ll go and buy you some aloe if you go to the room now?” Bribery always worked with Ana, regardless of the ‘prize’. Nodding, Ana stood up, grabbing the back of her thighs, which had been stuck to the wooden stool for too long.
“Aloe.” Ana mumbled, collapsing on the bed. Rebecca knew that when she came back, Ana would be in the middle of the mattress, leaving her no room. But Rebecca had slept on the floor before and she could do it again.
“I’m leaving now. Your phone is by your head if you need me…” Night one and Rebecca was already on ‘mom-duty’. She knew she would have to take care of Ana, but not because of sunburn, alcohol yes.
Grabbing her purse and room key, she quickly left and gently shut the door behind her.
The city was even more beautiful at night. Most of the crowds were gone, so the streets were quiet, aside from faint music coming out from an opened window and some chatter from the couple walking a ways ahead of Rebecca. The night was also much cooler than the day; she tugged the denim jacket she had grabbed closer to her neck and wrapped her arms across her chest.
Without any real idea where she was walking to, Rebecca set off down the street. Once she got used to the wind biting her skin, she realized it was nice outside. She waved away a taxi driver and tried to remember if she saw a corner store on the ride from the airport. Sure enough, there was one, only a couple blocks from the girls’ hotel. Rebecca walked a little faster and yanked the door.
But it didn’t open. The sign on the door said ‘closed’ in bright red letters. But the lights are on, she thought to herself. She tried against to open the heavy glass and metal door, but it wasn’t budging. Someone inside yelled for her to go away. At least people say please in Italy.
“They just closed.” Someone explained behind her.
“I can see that.” She retorted, with more venom than she meant. She spun on her sneakers’ heels and smiled politely to whomever spoke to her. “I mean, thank you.” She tried to speak as sweetly as possible. The last thing she needed was to insult someone and then have a scene.
The guy smiled, seeing that she was slightly embarrassed. “There’s another store just down here.” He waved to the southern end of the street and explained it was opened until midnight. “But what are you looking for, maybe there’s somewhere you can?” He asked. His eyes seemed like black pits in the limited night light. Despite his dark eyes, he seemed harmless enough.
“Aloe, my friend is sunburned—“
“Ahhhh.” He smiled and rubbed his chin. Laughing slightly he looked back up at her. “Yeah, that store will have that in stock. It’s vacation time and none of the stupid tourists bring their own…”
“Yeah.” Rebecca blushed again.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…you’re not a stupid tourist…” He fumbled, trying to backpedal. Rebecca smiled, seeing him flustered. “I’ll leave you alone now.” He suggested, pulling his keys from his pocket. Rebecca laughed and thanked him again for his help. He waved it off and told her it was nothing.
As Rebecca turned to walk to the store, she heard the man open his car down and quickly shut it behind him. She looked over at his car. It was blacker than the night sky and more than likely cost more than any and everything she owned. She could see him moving around through the front windshield, the only window that wasn’t tinted. As he leaned back in his seat, he looked at her. Rebecca looked away quickly, but not before seeing him smile.
