When or if I started shipping jily: I honest to god wish I remember exactly when it happened. I have to assume it was sometime soon after OotP came out, because SWM was sort of the spark that started it all for everyone. I was already in fandom waving my hardcore Harry/Ginny flag, and pivoted rather hard to Lily/James afterward. There was something just so irresistible about those two adorable jerks and the way they went from point A to Z.
My thoughts: They are the great loves of my life.
What makes me happy about them: I love the idea that you just have these two wonderful, passionate, strong-willed conquerors, from two entirely different worlds, clashing at times, who fell in love and changed the world in such a short amount of time. I love that we as creators have so much space to play around with them. Their story is epic, and we get to tell it again and again and again.
What makes me sad about them: Well, I don’t know if you’ve heard, but...
Things I look for in art/fic: GOOD CHARACTERIZATIONS. That’s my bread and butter. I will literally read a fic about the pair of them watching the grass grow if they do it with the correct depth and panache. It’s a disservice to both of them to make their characters flat when there’s so much inside there.
Things done in art/fic that annoys me: I have short patience with most of the older classic tropes--James incessantly asking her out, Lily as an absolute shrew, etc etc. I understand their place in fandom, but I can’t swallow them much anymore.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I mean, I feel like Sirius had dibs? Though I’d prefer the #thruple route than exclusively one or the other.
My happily ever after for them: I think the power and pleasure of writing James/Lily is that they were these two fools falling in love amidst a world that was falling apart. I rarrrrrely (if ever) cross any timeline that brushes close to the end of their lives because I don’t find pleasure in that, but everything that came before it is just so epic and you can take it in so many directions and thus I will write their short but sweet happily-ever-after a different but equally brilliant way every time.
What is their favorite non-sexual activity? I feel like these two get off on deep, passionate debate. About everything, big and small, from what to make for dinner that night, to how to take down a monster. Foreplay with words, you know?
