The Flight and Fanciful, Jim Abuan
This triptych would compliment a spacious modernist/contemporary style home, as well as initiate an aesthetic conversation. Although hybridized in its abstractionism, this painting almost suggests lines, shapes, movement and color that are found in Michaelangelo frescoes - thus the dynamics between past and current sensibilities. Rather than invent imagery, the artist chose to use "found" images from fashion magazines to work with and edit, adhering entire pages to fully cover the canvas. By isolating/separating faces, legs, arms, bodies from context and painting over/out visual information and accompanying text, the elements have been transplanted into a new spatial environment without changing the location of those images. Unlike a collage, the painterly strength of this piece results in a never ending visual feast for the art collector.
