Doves, along with Feeder, were my favourite band about 20 yrs ago in the time of The Last Broadcast album, but after the Kingdom of Rust I slowly Iost interest in the band. This song is so like Doves I fell in love with.

Some rock musicians who do instrumentals tend to use this type of songs for testing. I mean, I feel many bands who want to switch from, let's say, dance music to rock might do something like this. True, this oddly specific circumstance can only describe the situation of Doves who worked as an electronic music outfit before their transformation into a fine alternative to Britpop. Thus, the fact their debut contained a few tunes without vocals should be seen as them checking out on whether or not they can actually function within the idiom. Of course, we all know the answer can only be affirmative from their consequent career, yet their introduction in the form of a disc felt like an uncertain dare. No surprise they just played on a couple of tunes, Sub Sub wasn't that far away then.
