imagine you have friends or family that come over semi-regularly and you also have pets. and those pets have named items, like a bed and a bowl and maybe some photos on the wall. and eventually you add another bed and bowl, for a small dog named jimmy. and your friends come over and are like "oh my god you got a new dog!" and you're like "yeah he's a shy little guy, i don't know if you'll see him" and they move on but they keep coming over and never see jimmy. you start adding his photos to the wall, texting them updates. get him more toys. if the gig gets to hard to keep up you say he's at the vet, the groomer. eventually your friends and family start looking at you a bit weird. they press you but you're firm on it that as a rescue dog he needs to take his time. maybe someday something tragic happens to jimmy, and they're skeptically forced to comfort you. maybe someday you finally "let up" and pull out a eerily similiar to the photos stuffed dogs, like those made to order ones. anyways just a fun little game to play with your friends, they will trust you fine after don't worry
