Okay I know I made a joke literally the other day about it, but I genuinely think that Katara and Zuko always being mistaken for a couple in-universe is genuinely one of those things where every time it happens I'm like "is this real?" Because we as Zutara shippers understand that this is meant to be Bryke saying "haha lol they still don't like each other like that they never will" but in my mind it only makes me ship them more because their reactions are so obviously overblown that they're acting like middle schoolers denying a crush because "ew boys have cooties". We even see in-universe how when Katara is accused by Toph of having a "secret thing with Haru" she doesn't care at all, because there was never any secret thing (there is romantic coding for sure but they never have a romantic relationship and the romantic coding hasn't been present since S1 when Toph talks about it in S3).

And in S1 when June calls Katara Zuko's girlfriend, he does not care at all because he doesn't know her, but later on when he gets to know her and spend time with her he's embarrassed and defensive.

It's also worth noting that he has gotten defensive about being mistaken for someone's boyfriend in the past, again when he actually liked the girl: Jin.

It's just so funny to me because after it happens time and time again the only possible conclusion I can come to is that they do have feelings for each other. Everyone around them is picking up the vibe they're throwing down, even when their closest friends can't, even when they can't themselves, because, you know, 'That's just how Katara and Zuko are. They're always like that with each other. Yes it's totally normal for them to stare tenderly into each other's eyes while Katara caresses his face. Yes Zuko randomly buys her gifts at every occasion, what about it?'

And what makes it even more hilarious is that everyone else seems to be able to understand the inherent romantic coding to this repeating trope that Bryke uses as a sort of "gotcha" for why the ship will never be canon. Bryke are literally so bad at writing romance that they are accidentally using a romantic trope as a way to discredit a ship that they don't like.
