Trends - I’m aware that I tend to write in images, that I like showing, showing, showing. Looking over these lines I can still see the opening visual I had in mind for most of them. 

I am mildly surprised to see that Harold, with Nathan or Grace, accounts for most of the dialogue starting fic on this list. That fits in with how I imagine his relationship with those two, more verbal. With Reese, I see the relationship as being more internal, neither of them being very good at using their words.

Finally, there was a real frustration in doing this meme. I am a forever editor. A few of this lines were unsatisfying to my ear or eye when I wrote them and still are. One glaring example is the stupid opening paragraph of Does It Lessen Your Affection? I don’t think that was as successful a written translation of the image in my mind as some other, and it always bugs me. On the flip side, I think I nailed a lot of my mind visuals in that fic, so it mostly balances out.

WIP Wednesday

With both Bear and the precious books secured at the Library, Reese and Finch took the marble steps down to the tunnel-side exit for a meandering walk through the park. As they walked, Finch detailed the life, so far, of–

"Gennaro Alighieri, 37, Italian national, clean passport. Based on his impressive social media foot print, our oboist is something of a rock star in world-class musician circles. He's in the country for the next month touring with the Venice Baroque Orchestra."

John's face went blank at the term 'baroque orchestra. Alighieri was their third high-society number in as many weeks. A murderous embezzler unmasked at a fundraiser at the natural history museum, a prodigal daughter who had chosen the ballet as the setting to secure her father's estate, and tonight, baroque period music at Lincoln Center.

John had an appreciation for the arts, but in much smaller doses. Walking close beside him, Finch chattered on.

"Tonight the orchestra is performing the work of Johann Friedrich Fasch, featuring the oboe da caccia."

"The?"

"It's an eighteenth century horn, the hunting oboe, as it was called back then. An antique that, you could say, was brought back from the dead. Hearing it played by a master like Alighieri will be a rare pleasure."

Pleasure wasn't the word John would have chosen. "You said the company moves on to Boston tomorrow which means whatever is going to happen will happen tonight. So, why would someone want to kill our oboe player?"

"Or— whom does Signor Alighieri plan on killing? Either way, we're on a very tight clock with this number," Finch countered as they emerged from the park two blocks later.

They hailed a taxi into Midtown, Harold bounded by the driver's body in front of them and John slid close on the seat next to him, protecting his right. Soon enough the taxi pulled into the porte-cochère of an elegant high-rise. Two white gloved doormen appeared beside the car to open the taxi doors for them and led them across the cobblestone drive to the gold and glass entryway.

The building concierge met them with a slight bow. "Good afternoon, Mr. Wren," the man said with compliable flourish. He gave John a slight nod before addressing Finch again. "Your delivery arrived earlier. Shall I have Marshall run it up?"

"No need, Saunders. We'll take it with us now."

"Certainly, sir." The concierge lifted his hand to signal the waiting doorman into action while he continued. "As to your other request, your car has been scheduled for 4:30. Will you need anything else for the evening?"

John watched the exchange with an impassive expression that masked his piqued interest. Saunders had given him a quick, coldly professional appraisal and as far as the staff was concerned he was Mr. Wren's nameless guest. As the men continued talking, Finch -Wren, said nothing to clarify John's role.

Marshall returned with the freshly cleaned tuxedos. Harold tipped his head a fraction and John quickly stepped forward to take the bag. When he turned back, Harold was already making his way across to the elevators and John fell into step behind him.
