PSA: Toxicity In The Digimon Fandom

It looks like Digimon Adventure: 2020 is bringing more fans back into the fandom -- and that, unfortunately, includes the toxic ones.

I recently had an encounter with someone who reblogged posts of mine about Sorato and the reboot series, where they pretended to be a “general Digimon fan who doesn’t care about ships”. But a quick survey of their blog showed that they were, in fact, a hardcore anti-shipper who cared way too much about ships (and, in particular, hating them). So instead of responding to them via a reblog, I sent them Asks, until it went on long enough that I just blocked them. The above are our exchanges. All the posts in the screenshots are public posts. I’m just choosing to hide their Tumblr name and not link to their toxic blog. I never knew there were actually people who seem to dedicate their lives to hating ships and their fans.

You can like or dislike a ship, that doesn’t matter, we all have personal preferences and we’re all entitled to them. But when you let your hatred for a ship fuel and motivate you to shape your online behaviour towards others in a negative way -- that’s toxic. I also saw anonymous hate being sent to other Sorato fans as well. If your hatred for a ship has consumed you so much that you’re being toxic to people simply for liking a ship you hate, you need to reassess yourself. Why do toxic people always have a severe lack of self-awareness? I don’t think I’ve ever encountered anyone so hypocritical and completely oblivious to their own toxicity as the person above.

Imagine being filled with so much hatred for a fictional relationship that you choose to use your time to hate-read posts about it, form super biased opinions about its fans, and hurl abuse at them for daring to like a ship you hate with the intensity of a thousand burning suns. Yeah, sorry, can’t relate. And I’m hoping that 99% of the Digimon fandom can’t, either.

Do you know if in tri , Sora and Matt Arent together? Or they are suposed to be boyfriend and girlfriend?

No, Sora and Yamato are not “officially” dating in Digimon Adventure tri. – producer Shuhei Arai gave some answers regarding them in a few magazines.

What’s going on between Taichi, Yamato and Sora? Taichi and Sora are classmates at the same school. High school is complicated period, so it’s not like there are any official relationships going on between them. Furthermore, due to Meiko transferring-in, new relationships are being born, and honestly, I think that it shouldn’t be very surprising to see changes between their relationships in any way shape or form in the near future. (Animage September 2016)

For whatever reason, after getting together at 14, Sora and Yamato broke up sometime before tri. starts. I think the most reasonable explanation is the cliché that a romantic relationship might “ruin” their friendship. But they get back together sometime after tri. ends (because how can the universe keep them apart?). Last Evolution Kizuna also doesn’t refute this, because though the movie doesn’t acknowledge whether they are dating or not, it’s implied that they at least keep in touch with each other. But even though they’re not “officially” dating in tri., for all intents and purposes, it seems like they kinda are?

What is Yamato’s Christmas present? Yamato will give Sora blue earmuffs. He might buy earmuffs of a similar colour to the hat Sora used to wear when she was an elementary school student.

What is Sora’s Christmas present? Sora will give Yamato a pair of hand-knitted gloves, because she wants him to take care of his hands for bass playing.

How Sora will spend Christmas ♡ Sora will go to Yamato’s concert with Jun Motomiya. She still can’t get into Jun’s aggressive moshing. However, she might get carried away by Yamato’s voice … and watch over him fondly. (Otomedia December 2015)

They sure are affectionate exes. Friends … but with strings attached.

How would Sora spend Valentine’s Day? She’d make a large amount of handmade chocolate for the Chosen Children and their Digimon. This year it’s absolutely essential for her to make some for the KNIFE OF DAY members, so in order to multiply her efforts she’d work hard with Piyomon to make them. (Otomedia February 2016)

It’s a romantic tradition in Japan for girls to “confess” to their crushes with homemade chocolate, and here Sora is making it for Yamato and his new band … which is what Sora did for Yamato in 02 on Christmas Eve (basically Valentine’s Day 2.0 in Japan). In tri. itself, there’s a bit of “background Sorato” where Sora and Yamato appear to be arriving together (like they were previously hanging out), plus their reactions and comments towards each other makes it seem as though their friendship runs just a bit deeper to be purely platonic (like they still harbour feelings for each other – I think this is more obvious for Yamato towards Sora). It’s fair to say that Sorato, canonically, have an on-and-off romantic relationship.

And the very last “Sorato” scene in tri. is supposed to imply that there’s something romantic brewing between them. I don’t actually like the scene itself because … Yamato, who is usually perceptive (though the tri. writers really don’t think so), would definitely notice something as obvious as Sora getting a new haircut – especially one that drastic. But I like the intent of the cliché anime scene – which is to give viewers the impression that Sora and Yamato are going to become a couple … eventually.

Sorato is no loner a canon couple as Digimon Adventure is officially getting rebooted. How do you feel about it?

I think you’re prematurely jumping to conclusions. We don’t know enough about the reboot – it could just be a modern take on Adventure and … Sorato are foreshadowed to end up together all over again. Who knows? We certainly don’t. It hasn’t aired yet.

Also, you must be unaware, but just because a series gets “rebooted” doesn’t mean it makes all previous versions of it “non-canon”. Adventure, 02, tri. (and Last Evolution Kizuna?) are all canon in their own continuity, despite whatever the new series does. Sorato will always be canon in the original Adventure universe – even if it doesn’t end up “happening” in the new Digimon Adventure Psi series.

So my feelings on it? I don’t care. Sorato still exists canonically in the Adventure universe I grew up with. And, frankly, I’m too old to care about what other people perceive to be canon or not. It really doesn’t matter.

But I’m flattered that, despite the fact that I’ve been totally inactive in the Digimon fandom for a year, a complete stranger thought my opinion was important enough to seek out.

Stumbled across your page quite by accident and really enjoyed combing over the information you gathered regarding Yamato's and Sora's relationship. From being someone who always thought Tai and Sora would end up together (only watched Eng dub), I have to say you changed my mind completely. Still bummed out I had it wrong for all these years but, ah, alas. I was wondering: is Taichi/Meiko in Tri supposed to "sweeten" the "loss" of Sora? If so I'm lost: their "relationship" isn't well done at all

Awww, thanks! :D It’s nice to know my old posts still get read by new people (written way back when I was young and passionate … lol). ^_^

The English dub definitely “pushed” Taiora a lot more than the original Japanese version did. But, I think some people think that means that “Taiora is entirely a dub invention” – it doesn’t and it isn’t. Taiora is definitely pushed as a “budding romance” more in the English dub (there are dialogue changes and different interpretations of scenes…), but the original Japanese does give you a strong foundation for their friendship as well (which a lot of people like using as a basis for romance – and that’s fine).

Oh, and the Japanese movie staff just ran with Taiora, so. That’s what most Japanese fans cite when they say, “I thought it was going to be Taichi and Sora … in Our War Game –”

Regarding Meichi: Yup, you hit the nail on the head. I don’t mind Meichi, but I personally prefer Taichi and Mimi together because they seem more compatible. (Michi is seriously underrated and I just don’t get it – Taichi and Mimi are like the homecoming king and queen.) But I don’t think Michi ever had a chance, because it goes against Koumi (one of their two biggest shipbaits) and because it doesn’t happen canonically in the epilogue (not that it stopped all the Takari shipbaiting…).

I think the tri. staff were too hesitant in the beginning on whether they wanted to rock the boat with a “replacement” love interest for Taichi. That’s why the Meichi “signs” in the first movie were so small … and then were dropped completely until movie 5. They tested it out a little, saw pushback from hardcore Taiora fans, and decided it wasn’t worth it? Then somehow decided they needed to do it anyway towards the end. I don’t know. The tri. staff generally annoy me with their mostly average – sometimes plain bad – writing.

Meichi could definitely have been done a lot better, if they had sprinkled in just a few little scenes in every film (and I don’t mean outright shipping scenes, but little nuggets of Taichi and Meiko getting to know each other or even just reacting to each other in some small way). Then it wouldn’t seem so abrupt in movies 5 and 6. So I’m definitely with you there.

(And before people claim Sorato was “abrupt” – bro, Sorato had an entire season of slow-building their friendship and showing viewers how compatible they would be via their personalities and character parallels and arcs. Taichi and Meiko literally had a few blushing scenes in the first movie and then BAM! MOVIE 5 DEEP TALK. That doesn’t cut it, tri.. Pad it out some more, OK?)

And maybe this is superficial, but my biggest disbelief with Meichi is that Reunion gives the audience the impression that Taichi likes Sora … and I just don’t buy that any guy would “choose” Meiko over Sora. Like … what even. Yes, I know Sora isn’t available – she’s got Yamato, kthxbye – but she doesn’t have to be available for Taichi to like her. And Meiko isn’t a very likeable character/person. I think it’s hard for the average viewer to understand why Taichi would like her (especially “over” Sora) … because, WHY??? Tri. didn’t really answer this, save for one good scene in movie 5. So it appears that Taichi goes from liking Sora one moment to digging Meiko the next. And it just doesn’t make sense – because tri. never developed Meichi enough for it to.

(Although maybe Sora’s new haircut scared Taichi away? HAHAHA. OMG Mimi save her please. Yamato wouldn’t criticise her hair, he’d just say she looks great, because he’s in love. Mimi, you’re our only hope.)

But there might be a sequel to tri. in the works – and if there is, perhaps Taichi and Meiko’s “relationship” can be fleshed out then? We’ll see.

(I’d rather Sorato being given more focus though… if I’m being entirely honest, haha. Now there’s two people who should definitely end up getting married! ;))

For those of you wondering, I’m still planning to do Sorato analysis posts for movies 5 and 6 – I’ve just been super busy since before the last film came out. Maybe this upcoming weekend – but if not, next weekend! Movie 5 will just be a screenshots post anyway, lol. Movie 6 is the one I actually have some things to talk about! And then maybe I’ll do a “final” post with all thoughts on tri. and Sorato as a whole. This blog needs content! XD

“Encore! Encore!” Mimi and Miyako chanted.

Clapping and laughing, Hikari, Sora, and Takeru took up the refrain. “Encore! Encore!”

Flushed, Taichi grabbed a protesting Yamato by the arm back to the front of the karaoke room to generous applause.“All right, you heard our fans! Encore! Let’s do a duet!” Taichi exhorted.

Eleven Chosen cheered in unison over Yamato’s grumbling.

Daisuke waited until the song began and Taichi started crooning to Yamato before he leaned over to resume his urgent whispering. “Please, Ken? This is the perfect time!”

Ken glanced at their singing mentors with shifty eyes. “I don’t know…”

“It’s just a harmless prank! C’mon, you gotta help me get them back. I still haven’t gotten the smell of fermented bean curd out of my mattress - Jun’s been telling everyone that I don’t do my football laundry! I don’t smell that bad.” Sensing Ken’s wavering, Daisuke leaned forward. “You owe me for telling them where I hide my apartment key.”

“They said they were leaving a surprise gift for you,” Ken protested. “I didn’t know you were in a prank war with them.”

“Since you helped them once, you have to help me to make things fair.”

Ken sighed. “If you get in trouble. I’m going to deny all knowledge,” he warned.

Beaming, Daisuke handed the phones over and promised, “They’ll never even know it was you.”

“I’m already regretting this,” Ken said mournfully as he unlocked Taichi’s phone.

After washing up that night and falling into bed, Yamato felt his phone vibrate with Sora’s ringtone.

> Did you have fun tonight?

>> Actually, yeah. Did you?

The next day dawned perfectly bright and cloudless. Yamato got on his motorcycle and drove to the park with a feeling like flying in his chest. He couldn’t quit smiling. He had to force himself to stroll casually to their planned meeting spot even though he wanted to run.

He came up short when he saw Taichi sitting on the park bench but then recovered. “Hey man. What’s up?”

“Yamato?” Taichi blinked and then grinned. “Hey, what are you doing here?”

Yamato hesitated. “I was going to meet Sora for lunch.”

Taichi’s grin grew. “Oh-ho! Does that mean - ”

“Don’t jinx it, Taichi, please.”

“Aww. I’m happy for you.”

Yamato felt his face grow warmer. He checked quickly to make sure Sora wasn’t close yet. “Don’t say anything, okay?”

Taichi solemnly nodded, though his eyes remained mischievous. “Can I tell Mimi, though? We had a bet.”

“You what! Since when?”

“Well… ah… since you broke up?”

“Please tell me Sora doesn’t know about it.”

“We didn’t tell her a thing,” Taichi promised. “Mimi and I agreed, no saying anything unless something actually happens. But now that you two are meeting up for a romantic lunch - ”

“It’s not a romantic lunch! It’s just - we’re just - ”

“Uh-huh.”

Yamato demanded, “What are you doing here anyway? Who are you waiting for?”

Taichi froze. “Who said I’m waiting for anyone?” he said unconvincingly.

Yamato snorted. “You just sit at the park all the time by yourself?”

“I might. Introspection is good every once in awhile.”

He narrowed his eyes. After a moment, Yamato snapped his fingers. “Got it. You’re meeting with Meiko, aren’t you?”

Taichi blanched. “No, I’m not.”

“You’ve got a shitty poker face, buddy. This is why Iori always cleans you out.” Yamato felt a slow smile of his own grow. “How long has this been going on?”

“Nothing’s going on.” Yamato gave a stern look and Taichi sighed. “I don’t know what to tell you. We’ve been talking since the whole… you know.” He waved his hand. “But that’s it. We just talk.”

“So you were going to meet her here too?”

Taichi nodded and checked the time. “Yeah, we were going to meet at this bench at twelve and go for a walk before eating lunch. Actually she’s running late, normally she’s pretty early… I hope nothing happened to her.”

“Where were you going to eat lunch?”

“I don’t know, we didn’t decide. Do you think I should text her?” Taichi already had his phone out and had begun tapping a message.

“Probably not a bad idea.” Come to think of it, Sora was late too. Yamato went to draw out his phone when a text from her popped up.

> Hey, I’m here! :) Where are you?

Yamato froze. 

He slowly looked up at Taichi, over at the bench, and then back down to his phone.

Then he swore loudly, making Taichi jump.

“What’s wrong? Is Sora okay?” Taichi asked, instantly worried.

Yamato pinched the bridge of his nose. “I don’t know how he did it, but this is Daisuke’s fault. I can feel it.”

“What’s Daisuke’s fault?”

Instead of answering aloud, Yamato sent a single text to “Sora.”

>> He pranked us.

Taichi bemusedly took out his phone and read the text - made a double-take and read it again. Yamato watched the play of emotions across Taichi’s face: confusion, bewilderment, horror, anger, and then resignation. “He got us pretty good,” Taichi admitted. “I’d be more impressed if I wasn’t so pissed.”

“Same.” Yamato exhaled. “So much for our lunch with the girls.”

“Yeah.” Taichi closed his phone and put it away. “Well, since you’re free for lunch… Wanna go eat and plot our revenge?”

“You read my mind.”

My goal is to get a +4 Omegamon. I currently have a +3 Vikemon, waiting for a MetalGarurumon event to get 21 of his shards to make him a +4 MetalGarurumon . . . and then of course, waiting for WarGreymon and Omegamon events to get their shards, too.

It’s a tough life being a Chosen Child/DigiDestined! XD
