eta: here's an explanation...
The hanky code is literally the oldest and most well known language in the gay community. Depending on the colour of the bandana and which pocket it's in, it tells every other gay person your preferences, cutting out lots of time wasting (and also the potential danger of approaching someone who isn't interested and likely to punch you in the face if you proposition them).
