Where do Hogwarts students buy presents? They don't go to Hogsmeade too often. Are there catalogues laying around the common room? Do you just give your owl money and have it pick something up? And I know there's some law in Deathly Hallows that says you can't make something from nothing, but it obviously happens in the Half-Blood Prince. Maybe that's what happens.
