Hi!
This is from December of 2023.
The Just Look My Way music video had just come out and it absolutely emotionally devastated me! I wanted to figure out, why so I did a deep dive visual analysis of it.
I referenced the book 'Picture This: How Pictures Work' by Molly Bang, which is a fantastic book that I learnt so much from. It's a short and easy read but contains knowledge that I think every artist should know.
I also used knowledge that I learned from Bill Perkins CDA class "Style Development for Animation," that I took that year, as well as things I had learned from my mentor at uni.
I learnt so much from this exercise! I grew a greater appreciation for the music video and the artists who worked on it. Shout out to Samantha Ames who storyboarded it, as well as all the other artists at Spindlehorse who created it!
You can try reading my illegible handwriting if you want to understand my analysis, haha!
I really did learn a lot from this exercise that I still carry into my artwork today. It was very fun! It feels really good to lift up the metaphorical hood of the car and seeing how the engine works. It really ignited my spark for storyboarding and Keyframe illustration, and visual storytelling. If you are interested in art or filmmaking, storyboarding, storytelling, I highly recommend this exercise!
The aim of this exercise is to try to observe how the artist used the arrangement of shapes in the composition to communicate the story and meaning?
What was the purpose of this shot and what visual techniques did they use to achieve it?
What visual language did they use?
How did they implement symbolism and metaphor...?
Ect...
I don't really remember what I learnt? But I do remember pulling my classmate aside at a party and talking to her for an hour about the compositional and visual language ideas present in the music video! 😂😂😂😂😂
And I used to be in denial that I was Autistic! 😂😂😂😂😂
Anyways, hope this is interesting! I find it very interesting! I am a huge analytical nerd, both for Helluva Boss and for Animation and film making!
See you later! <3
