Hi!
So I'm finally getting around to posting my art!
I drew this about 2 years ago, June 2023. I tried to redraw it recently but I felt I couldn't recapture the emotion of the original artwork. Even though I am technically a better artist now, it was really stilted and fell flat.
I do remember when I was drawing this piece I was getting really emotional.
I remember the intended story behind this artwork went something like... Octavia is just born and Stolas is a teenager. He feels really alone and like there is no light or joy in the world. But he looks down at Octavia, and decides that Octavia is his reason to keep on living now...
Here are some of the sketches I created for the development of this illustration:
Being on Tumblr feels very natural. I feel like I was built for this platform, should have done this years ago.
Woo! I'll be posting more soon! : )
HAHAHHAAHHAAH!!!
ππππππππππ
I'm using art for EEEEVVVILL!!!!
But, uh, thank you for engaging with my artwork! I'm glad that it emotionally resonated with you.
That artwork came from a very emotional place! You know, I love Stolas, I do really connect and relate to his character. I notice I keep coming back to similar emotional subject matter in my work.
I agree, Poor Stolas! π
β€οΈ
I had already posted this illustration back in August, but I accidently deleted it somehow :, ( so I'm reposting it. I'm so sad... Anyways, enjoy again!
Some behind the scenes stuff:
This is an artwork I am working on at the moment. It isn't quite finished yet. I'm not sure when or even if I'll finish it, but here's the sketch in the meantime:
And here is my process for the creation of this if you are interested:
Designing the outfits : T
I ended up scrapping Blitz' jacket sadly, it wasn't working with his pose : (
I began this piece a long time ago. When I recently went back to it I totally forgot how suggestive it was until I was drawing Blitz' tongue and I was like, "Oh yeah..." XD
You know... you put those two in a room and, you know, its inevitable, they can't help it. Its not me, its them. You know, i'm just accurately illustrating what they are like, I had no other motivations when I began this drawing.
totally pure intentions all the way through! π
Something that I do want to talk about that I think is super interesting is the composition!
This artwork is about the tension between them right before they kiss. I'm trying to communicate the feeling of... it's inevitable. Those two are going to come together, it's only a matter of time. So I decided to tilt the camera and have Stolas leaning into Blitz, as if he is falling towards him.
Anyways, hope you enjoy! ππππ 0 )----( 0

Hi!
So Mission Zero came out recently. I thought it was really great! I really enjoyed it.
The writing, animation and art direction was all really fantastic. It's amazing to see the improvement over the original pilot and how far Spindlehorse has come.
Something that confused me about the episode though, was that I was really struggling to interpret Blitzβ motivations for having sex with Stolas, and his hesitancy in accepting the transactional sexual relationship with him.
I spent a lot of time rewatching the episode and trying to analyse it and come up with different interpretations.
My first interpretation was that Blitz doesnβt like Stolas very much, and was afraid of him because he's a prince and he stole his book. Blitz was just having sex with him to appease him and get him out of his office. Blitz wasn't thrilled at having to continue to have sex, but was willing to do it because he really wants the book.
But that interpretation didnβt make sense to me?
In the show, Blitz is never scared of Stolas (except briefly in 201 when Blitz is caught trying to steal his book), and is never afraid of saying no or talking back to him.
Blitz: Ugh, look I just had a chemical peel, so youβll have to find someone else's face to plant that feathered ass! (102)
Blitz: Iβm not fucking you tonight, ok? (107)
Blitz: I canβt today (204)
Blitz never tries to appease Stolas in the show because of his authority as a Prince. Blitz is often really disrespectful and rude to him actually.
Blitz actively disrespects authority, and is very confrontational and fearless. He is impulsive and petty and vengeful, and often puts himself in non ideal situations because he couldnβt help but start a fight. He also does things without thinking about the consequences of his actions.
Blitz gets into fights like all of the time, in every episode!
And isnβt Blitzβ ability to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and not care what other people think, a really important part of his character?
Millie: Until I met some knucklehead who never gave a fuck about what anyone said he could or couldnβt be. He made me believe he could be anything. (210)
Blitz just isn't the type of person who does things he doesn't want to do.
I was leaning towards the interpretation that Blitz was just having sex with him to appease him and for the book, until I was rewatching the episode and saw this shot and I was like, "Oh I think heβs in love with him."
This is a shot of Stolas from Blitz' pov. The music is very romantic and gentle. Stolas looks beautiful! He looks gorgeous. His voice is soft and soothing, almost parental. Itβs a very intimate shot. It's the type of shot that you would use to communicate that someone is in love.
I then had the question of...
Is Blitz afraid of Stolas because heβs a prince? Or because he's afraid of intimacy?
I then decided to rewatch the episode with the interpretation that Blitz actually likes Stolas, but is afraid of appearing to be into him and having a relationship with him because he is afraid of intimacy.
(EDIT 26/10/25. I should have been clearer here when I first wrote this. I'm not actually suggesting that Blitz is IN LOVE with Stolas in Mission Zero, but that perhaps Blitz has feelings for him. Its just that my inner monologue when I was watching the ep happened to be, "Oh I think he's in love with him.")
I donβt believe this is the only way to interpret this scene, or it is the βcorrectβ way to interpret this scene, but I will be making my arguments and hopefully you find them interesting and persuasive!
Let's go through Mission Zero!
Blitz: Satan fucking damnit Iβm trying to plan a hit here, this better be go-AAAHHHH! Wha?!
Stolas: Hello Blitzy!
Blitz: Hey, Stolas, what are you doing here?
Stolas: You said you were busy at work so I decided to make work a little more⦠fun!
Blitz: Wow, ok, not how I thought my day was going to go. Look, your majesty, there are other people here, coworkers! And I donβt, I donβt want to make a scene, ok?
So of course Blitz is really shocked and surprised! He is quite nervous and uncomfortable and overwhelmed. He doesnβt really know how to navigate this situation! You could argue that he is also very flustered?
This episode does contain multiple moments that subtextually communicate that Blitz is uncomfortable with intimacy, such as when Millie and Moxxie flirting with eachother here and here.
Millie: Hey! He ain't no virgin. I should know.
Blitz: All right, guys, come on!
And also here. Blitz is annoyed when Millie and Moxxie start having sex, derogatorily calling it βfilth,β but still takes out his phone to film them and enjoys watching them. He is then annoyed when he is pulled away from it.
Blitz: Oh fuck, here they go again. Loona, sweetheart, I need you to avert your eyes, this is a horny married couple and you donβt need to see this filth.
This subtextually communicates that Blitz finds intimacy uncomfortable and annoying, and puts up a front of disliking it, but he still enjoys it and wants to partake in it.
We know that this is a very consistent character trait of Blitz throughout the show.
I've seen the argument being made that Blitz sleeps with Stolas here to distract him from taking the book back. But I would like to argue against that, because the book holds no importance in the cinematography (until after Blitz sleeps with him.)
There is this shot which focuses on the book, and you can briefly see Blitz looking at it (he could just be looking at the candles) but the book does not show up as anything important in the sequence again.
This is unlike the scene in the circus when Blitz is trying to steal Stolas' Grimoire. The cinematography is clearly focused on and places a lot of emphasis on the book. Itβs very clear in this sceneΒ that Blitz is flirting with Stolas to get the book.
Also, after they finish having sex and Blitz is getting dressed, he has his back turned towards it. It's like he forgot about it.
So, Blitz is likely not having sex with Stolas or nervous because of the book.
So, is he nervous because Stolas is intimidating?
He doesn't look intimidating at all! He looks like a harmless cute little kitten melting in your hands. Complete dork. Like a school girl with a crush. No thoughts, head empty. π₯° I love him.
Compare that to this scene from Hazbin hotel ep 4 Masquerade.
Valentino is very intimidating!
He is moving towards Angel, invading his space, entrapping him, overpowering him, dominating the composition. He is aggressive, physically berating him, and threatening him.
Stolas never moves closer to him or horde his book, all he does is lie seductively on his desk lol. Infact, Blitz moves closer to him!
I would argue that Blitz is uncomfortable here because... well this is extremely unexpected, but also because he is uncomfortable with intimacy and public displays of affection, not because Stolas is a prince or he's intimidating or because he's worried about the book.
Something else that could be relevant here, is that Blitz has a hard time believing anyone could actually love him, that may play into Blitz' hesitancy here.
Blitz: "You don't hate me?" (210)
Stolas: Mmmmmm, you didnβt mind making a scene the last time.
Blitz: oh yeah.
Flashback to βthe last time.β
Now this moment is very interesting!
I think it is implied that Blitz cuddled with Stolas all night and only left when he had too. Blitz could have left right as Stolas went to sleep, he could have left earlier, but he decides to stay all night even though he was originally going to do this "real fast."
Also by how difficult it was for Blitz to remove himself from Stolas, itβs implied that he held Stolas very tightly.
In the original pilot, Blitz is characterised as being mischievous and cocky (ha) when he steals Stolasβ book. But in the remake, he is characterised as being very nervous.Β
Is he nervous because he is stealing a magical artifact from a powerful prince?
Or is he nervous because he really enjoyed that night with Stolas and formed a connection with him. But it terrified him because he's afraid of intimacy and getting too close to people, so now heβs trying to run away like he did with all his previous exes.
Moxxie: Why do you push your friends away? (106)
But you donβt want to do things alone Blitzo! You tried the solo act, it didnβt work out so well! Yet you still shove away anyone who gets to close until they resent you for being a selfish shitty shit fuck! (106)
Stolas: Are you afraid to love people Blitzy? (106)
Blitz: If by βcrushes other people's feelingsβ you mean end shit before it gets serious than bingo! Iβm doing everyone a favour, because relationships are boring! (209)
Relationships are not actually boring, he wants a relationship so bad!
Verosika: How do you think I felt? When the fun guy I was dating decided to just bail on me because I made the shitty mistake of saying βI loveβ¦β Guh! (209)
Blitz: Stolas, you are better off without me, kay? You deserve so mu- I don't even know why you want to be with me. (209)
We know that Blitz is terrified of getting too close to people because he imagines himself as some kind of poison who can only cause pain to other people. This comes from his childhood trauma of... well... killing his mum and almost murdering his best friend.
Millie: Youβll never stop fucking peoples lives up. When was the last time you loved someone without hurting them? (210)
Blitz: Donβt touch me! I destroy everything, everyone. I make everyone's lives worse! (210)
Blitz: Sheβs still not mad about that is she?
Stolas: Extremely : (
Blitz: Yeesh, oof. Iβm so sorry about that.
You can interpret this moment as Blitz appeasing Stolas.
But you could also interpret it as Blitz genuinely feeling bad for him and sincerely apologising for causing Stolas to get caught cheating.
Stolas: Aw, how about you Pump me full of βSorryβ right on this Desk?
Blitz: Uh, I just cleaned that de- All right, you know what? Fine, you win, clothes off, let's go. Holes out, poles out, lets get this done in 5 seconds!
Can I tell you that this scene is hot as hell? It's genuinely really erotic and horny! The things I have seen people say, and the fanart I saw... This show is taking me further from god.
Like jesus christ Stolas, this scene made me blush so hard. I was so flustered!
Which leads me to my next point.
I think Blitz had sex with Stolas... just because he wanted too. Like, he's hot. π€£
(EDIT 26/10/25. I failed to make the point that I originally intended to here. I meant to argue that the directional choice for this scene to have a light hearted, comedic, sexy tone I think is important to factor in on how you are supposed to interpret this scene.
You could interpret this moment as, Blitz is like..Β
Problem: rich, powerful guy is in my office who wants to bone.
Solution: have sex with him and then heβll go away.Β
But Blitz doesn't try to do anything else. He could have left the room, he could have told him to go away, he could have given an excuse, he could have grabbed the book and dashed outta there, he could have killed him, idk.
But he folded and slept with him so fast under zero pressure. Stolas only had to ask once.
Like in 10 seconds Blitz spread open Stolasβ legs, undid his pants, took of his belt, opened his jacket, climbed on top of Stolas, ran his hands down his thighs, up his body to his collar, pulled him close, grabbed his arm, flipped him over, held his arms behind his back and pulled his hair. That's way more extra than he needed to be. It's almost comedic how quickly they fuck LOL. π€£
Throwing away the candle over his shoulder (even though it was still lit and a fire hazard) could be interpreted as symbolic for Blitz throwing away his inhibition and caving into his desires.
There's also an interesting moment where, at least to me, it looks like Stolas is about to kiss Blitz, and Blitz literally shoves Stolasβ face away from him. Having sex with him is fine, but kissing him would be too intimate for Blitz to feel comfortable with.
(EDIT 26/10/25. I disagree with myself here. I don't think that what's going on. My shipping brain just got very excited π)
Only when Stolas canβt see him, does Blitz smile.
To me, this communicates that Blitz doesnβt want Stolas to know how badly heβs into it. He only feels comfortable showing how much he enjoys having sex with Stolas and how much he wants him when heβs not looking. : (
Also the writers are showing that the dynamic ofβ¦ Blitz is really rough and aggressive during sex because he is afraid of intimacy and being vulnerable and gentle with someone. To the point where, even while he is HAVING SEX with someone, he still has to put on a dominating, charismatic persona to be comfortable engaging in it.Β
Blitz: Moxxie, I'm a fucking top! (helluva shorts ep 2)
It reminds me of the classic Stolitz portrait from Ozzies.
To me this image communicates that Blitz really likes being with Stolas and wishes this were a real relationship, but he is afraid of intimacy. Only when Stolas is asleep does Blitz feel comfortable letting his guard down and expressing how much he enjoys being with him.
Stolas: [moans] Amazing⦠You are so much stronger than you look.
Blitz: Yeah, well, Iβm pretty sure your bones are hollow soβ¦
Blitz is vibing. He looks quite relaxed. He chose to cuddle with stolas and share a cigarette with him and stay with him after they had finished having sex, but I do notice he stops himself from fully reciprocating.
Blitz could be hugging him or nuzzling into him, or he could have just immediately left when Stolas came. But he chose to stay, share a cigarette with him and snuggle with him, but doesnβt allow himself to get too close and be too intimate with him.
(EDIT 26/10/25. Something that I neglected to say here that I think is really important is that Blitz is deflecting. Blitz isn't emotionally reciprocating, and doesn't trust Stolas enough to believe his compliment.
This could be because Blitz doesn't like Stolas and doesn't trust him because he is a Prince, so of course he wouldn't reciprocate the compliment. Or it could be a manifestation of Blitz' self loathing.
I know that I sometimes don't believe compliments that people give me, and don't trust peoples intentions when they are friendly to me, because of my own low self esteem.
For example, one of my classmates at uni who I'm not particularly close with would sometimes wave to me and say, "Hi Zoe! How are you? Great to see you!"
And I'm just like, "?????? You couldn't possibly be that excited to see me. You must be faking it."
I just struggle to believe that someone could actually like me and be happy to see me. And this is something that Blitz struggles with as well.
Blitz: Oh, ok, alright, your fucking with me! (208)
Blitz: Oh sorry, this entire time I assumed the worst because I was convinced a Prince could never love someone like me... (209)
Blitz: How could you ever actually care for an imp? Me? (209)
When he notices Stolas is going to take away the book, then he rushes in to stop him.
Stolas: Iβll just be taking my grimoire and-
Blitz: Or - or⦠how about this. You could let me hold onto it for a little while. Please? There's this spell I have been wanting to try, and did I not just plow you on company time?
Blitz is likeβ¦
oh shit, he's taking the book away! Quick, improvise some sort of excuse!
"uhhhhhhh, you could⦠let me hold onto it for a little while!"
He's clearly just coming up with this right on the spot.
Blitz knows that Stolas doesnβt know that he stole his grimoire. And Blitz doesnβt want to confess to stealing it, so he is trying to keep the lie going.
He is of course nervous because he does really want this book, and he is lying to and manipulating a powerful goetia!
(EDIT 26/10/25. I actually now disagree with myself here. Someone who responded to this post pointed out that they thought Blitz only began to realise how powerful Stolas really was in truthseekers, and Stolas' power as a goetia likely didn't influence Blitz much here, and I agree with them. I think my first initial interpretation of the scene accidently bled in here.)
An interesting thing to note, when he is flirting with Stolas here, his body language is open, he is leaning towards stolas. He feels comfortable enough to tug on his collar. I donβt think Blitz is afraid of stolas here, he seems pretty relaxed and confident in his presence, he's just nervous because he's trying to manipulate him.
Stolas: Oh! Well I suppose as long as you have itβ¦ weβll be sure to see each other again! Now wonβt we?
Reiterating what I said earlier:
The music is very romantic and gentle. Stolas looks beautiful! He looks gorgeous. His voice is soft and soothing, almost parental. Itβs a very intimate shot. It's the type of shot that you would use to communicate that someone is in love.
They could have used any shot they wanted too. It could have been framed as a business exchange, or Stolas could have been intimidating, or they could have highlighted his power as a prince, or make him comedic...
But they chose THAT shot.
That's the thing that breaks Blitzβ composure here and makes him nervous. Not because Stolas is a prince, not because he doesnβt want to have sex with him, but because Blitz actually likes him and has feelings for him, and it terrifies him.
Maybe Blitz in this moment is like, "FUCK!!! I"M AFRAID OF INTIMACEY AND GETTING CLOSE TO PEOPLE!!! I GOTTA RUN!!!!"
He turns to run away but finds that he can't because he needs the book. So now he can't avoid having a relationship with this guy.
Verosika: How do you think I felt? When the fun guy I was dating decided to just bail on me because I made the shitty mistake of saying βI loveβ¦β Guh! (209)
Blitz: I [sighs] yes we... I guess we will.
And also the specific word choice of βto SEE each other again,β not, βhave sex with each other again.'
Like, sex isnβt the issue for Blitz.
Blitz just had sex with Stolas twice and enjoyed it.
Blitz frequently uses sex as a tool to get what he wants. For example Chaz in ep 203, and the bouncer to get into the club in 107.
Blitz: Millie, I have spent too much time, energy and holes into setting this up for us to entertain your bullshit! (210)
Blitz uses sex to escape from his emotions, such as in Ghostfuckers and Queen Bee.
Sex is the easiest thing for him to do, but intimacy, relationships, and feelings! To continue to SEE someone again. Those are the most difficult for him.
Blitz: Goddam son of a bitch.
And Blitz is resentful towards Stolas here because he managed to claw himself into Blitzβ heart, and now Blitz canβt run away from his feelings, and he now has to have a relationship with him.
And I think, my interpretation of the story, that is ultimately the thing that allowed Blitz to fall in love with Stolas. Blitz couldnβt easily leave the relationship with Stolas like he did all his other exes, because they were tethered by the book.
Also, with this interpretation, it gives this first episode and the last episode a strong narrative arc of Blitz overcoming his fear of intimacy and relationships. Going from only being able to be intimate with someone by being sexually aggressive, to being comfortable being attentive and gentle.
I would be very interested in hearing any of your guys' thoughts on this little essay. If you agree with me or disagree? I would love to discuss this further if anyone is interested.
This scene still genuinely still really confuses me, and I'm struggling to interpret it. I don't even totally agree with this interpretation and I keep flipping between different readings. I'm driving myself insane, please help.
If you disagree with this interpretation, that's fine too. I don't fully buy it myself, but I do think it is a justified and compelling interpretation of this scene that fits with the characters and narrative of the show.
I would like to thank @artyphex for this TikTok, it helped me in this analysis!
Thank you for making until the end! I know it was a lot haha! Hope you enjoyed this!
Love you <3

(I have made edits to this post, btw, if some of the reblogs have slightly different text, that's why π)
(EDIT 26/10/25 You know, looking back at this post I definitely agree with a lot of what I said, and disagree on other things. My thoughts on this scene have largely settled.
I think that this scene is intentionally written to be ambiguous. I think it's purposefully unclear how much Blitz likes him, how much he wants him, how much he cares about him, his real feelings and motivations... because for the first season of the show, it's also unclear how much Blitz likes Stolas too.
There's definitely a lot that I originally excluded from this post that I should have mentioned, and some new realisations that I have made since that would be interesting to discuss.
Maybe this post deserves a follow up : P
Anyways... Mission Zero is finally up on youtube! Now I can watch "I'll bring the horses 'round! I know you like that. Oh now your horsing around" in HD! Yay!)
I think I'll do a follow up to this soon because I have some other interesting things I wanna talk about! : )
Unfortunately for Blitz, Stolas is just too attractive π
Listening to omn1Media's interview with Adam Neylan, who's a writer on helluva boss and apparently also Hazbin.
I always love listening to the team talk about their product in the first place but especially here.. Cus I get validated for my own interpretation of the show.
The way the drama of the show handles has always been a favourite of mine. Because it deals with different perspectives and why that sometimes leads to conflict, even when no one meant to hurt. It's why I love the way Stolas is written.. Why I disagree that he's the "writer's pet" or whatever. Why I really like that he's a well-meaning person who continues to fuck up instead of a morally gray or evil - nice kinda character.
Cus that perspective is also important to explore. I love that they take the time to explore where conflict happen without anyone being the bad guy. Cus it's such a naturally occuring thing irl.. God knows most of my own conflicts happen that way. I never go out of my way to fight, I still end up fighting. Cus the way I view the world and articulate myself isn't the same as the person I'm speaking to.
They were speaking about the full moon fight in particular and how they fine tuned it so much to make sure neither Stolas nor Blitz came out looking like the one to blame. And Adam mentioned that the conflicts that developed within the fandom was proof of their success in that.
And pfft bruh, you're 100% right.. About all of it.. Cus the fandom and the antis both prove all the damn time how much previous perspectives shape how you view things.. That's why we have antis believing in the front Blitz put up at the beginning of season 1 and they believe that his version of Stolas is the true one. Probably cus they have a similar perspective to Blitz.
It's also why we have Stolas lovers that end up hating Blitz because they have a similar perspective or experiences to Stolas or just what it looks like at the surface.
It was fun to hear coming from a creator of the show.
I loved that Interview, its great! Everything that I want out of behind the scenes Interviews from creatives working on shows. It was very interesting hearing about their writing and production process. Adam Neylan was very sweet, I loved how he shouted out the other creatives who work on the show. <3
Hey so this isnβt an ask but I just wanted to say that your art is literally amazing!! The way you draw such dynamic poses and raw emotion in even just your sketches is so inspiring! I struggle with perspective a lot and looking at your drawings just leaves me in awe. Sorry Iβm rambling lol I just think youβre so talented! Keep up the hard work!!ππ«Ά
Correct me if Iβm wrong, but thereβs no way that the power imbalance between Blitz and Stolas can be an issue if Stolas doesnβt use that power imbalance in his favor. He never once uses his status as a means to force Blitz to do whatever he wants. Even though he very well could have, he chose not to because Stolas wants a genuine, healthy relationship with Blitz.
It wouldβve been easy for Stolas to destroy Blitzβs business, get rid of his loved ones and force Blitz into the palace with him to be his little pet. He could have demanded Blitz be at his beck and call 24/7, with no regards for if he possibly had to take Loona to get her shots or if he had clients in his office. Additionally, Stolas wouldnβt have allowed Blitz to keep having possession of his book (mind you, that Blitz STOLE) for a length of time without ever having sex if he was so concerned having control over someone smaller than him.
Does this sound like a character who is so concerned about maintaining a power imbalance?
I do think the power imbalance between them is an issue for them but in more subtler ways, such as Blitz having very little control and power over the conversation in Full Moon.
And also, Stolas would have never been able to initiate this transactional sexual relationship if he wasn't a prince with a birthright to a powerful magical spell book.
But you are right, Stolas never weaponises the power imbalance between them to get what he wants, largely because he doesn't know that it's there, and also he's very nice : )
Saw someone say that Blitz actually smiles as soon as he turns Stolas around and like- I forgot about his need to not let Stolas see that he has a good time with him. Like can we not. I was in denial land.
Hey all! After a LOT of hassle, the Exhausted Defense of Angel Dust video did go up again last night! I'd love it if you could boost it as best you can to try and get its numbers back. Thank you all for the support!
Studying how to draw Stolas on model in show style! π₯°Β
π¬ 0Β Β π 18Β Β β€οΈ 47Β Β·Β I have drawn Blitz many, many times, but I haven't studied how to draw him in a long time. I wanted to take some time to
I also wanted to study how to draw Stolas on model in the show style as well. It was quite difficult for the same reason that studying Blitz was, which was that there is a lack of consistency in the show, and it was beginning to really frustrate me.
How long are Stolas' legs? Nobody knows, I'm not sure even the animation director knows. π
(I don't mean this as an actual dis btw)
But I'm really happy with what I achieved, I think the final drawing really looks like him!
I definitely discovered a lot of things that I hadn't noticed about his character before, like his neck is wider at the top, like a V shape. The point in which his waist sinches in is a little below 1/2 length of his torso, and his chest protrudes quite dramatically from the side, to name a few.
I have drawn Blitz many, many times, but I haven't studied how to draw him in a long time. I wanted to take some time to learn how to draw him on-model in the shows style to be able to draw him more accurately.
Helluva Boss' style is very line and shape based. Movement, flow, elasticity, expressiveness and appealing drawings are favoured over form and consistency.
This is something great for the show! The characters being able to survive being off model is great for the animators, aswell as for fan artists and generating fandom.
But, makes it really hard for me to learn how to draw the characters!
During this exercise I constantly struggled with discerning Blitz' proportions and his graphical lines and shapes, because there is very little consistency in the show.
For example, Blitz is supposed to be about 4 heads tall, (minus his horns) but he can range from 3 to 5 heads tall!
That's about this much difference:
That is huge! Most shows wouldn't allow that type of flexibility.
So as I was doing this exercise I was like, what shape is his torso? I don't know. How long are his legs? I don't know. What shape are his boots? I don't know. His proportions are just vibes. ποΈ
Compare this to Knights of Guinevere. That show values form, consistency and quality drawings over more frames. HB and KOG have opposing animation styles, but that's because their are both very different shows with very different tones, and their animation reflects that.
Anyways, this was a really great exercise. Learned a lot, especially about line in character design. I was wrong about a lot of things, particularly the graphical shape of a lot of his body parts.
β€οΈβ€οΈπβ€οΈβ€οΈπ₯³β€οΈππ Helluva Boss Mission Zero Stolitz Office Sex Scene Analysis WOOO! β€οΈβ€οΈππβ€οΈβ€οΈπβ€οΈππ°β¨π«π
Because that situation would genuinely be dubiously consensual, and aren't these characters supposed to fall in love with each other?
And also, in the show, Blitz is never scared of Stolas (except briefly in 201 when Blitz is caught trying to steal his book), and is never afraid of saying no or talking back to him.
Blitz: Ok, wow, not how I expected my day to go.
So, Blitz is likely not having sex with Stolas or nervous because of the book.
Also, after they finish having sex and Blitz is getting dressed, he has his back turned towards it. It's like he forgot about it.
They just terrify him because he hates himself!
Like, he's hot. π€£
And thank you to @amalthea-13 for this post too, it was helpful.
Thank you for making until the end! I know it was a lot haha! Hope you enjoyed this!
Love you <3

You make a lot of good points, op! Like how unimportant the Grimoire is narratively until after the sex scene in Mission Zero, and how what makes Blitz nervous isn't the sex itself, but having to continue to see someone he's fucked when his modus operandi is to just ditch people before feelings can happen. And how unafraid he is to stand up to demons far more powerful than him.
Personally, regarding that last point, I think Blitz didn't think too hard about just how powerful Stolas was, at first. Yes, he was aware of the social imbalance between them and saw himself as unworthy of Stolas (see: Blitz's bad tripβthe golden staircase, Stolas' line "you don't deserve me"). But I don't think Blitz fully allowed himself to entertain the idea that Stolas is extremely fucking powerful until the end of Truth Seekers, when he saw Stolas' display of power against the DHORKS. And by then, he already knew Stolas well enough to know Stolas would never hurt him. So I don't think a fear of Stolas' powers was ever a key factor in their relationship, except, as you said, at the very beginning, when Blitz gets caught trying to steal the Grimoire at Stolas' palace.
That being said, I don't think Blitz was already in love in Mission Zero. I think your analysis of his emotional world and fear of intimacy, and how it shows through his body language and general attitude, is really accurate; but I'd perhaps say, by this point, Blitz was beginning to feel an inkling of complicated feelings that were veering a bit too close to yearning for his comfort. So not love yet, but the foundation for love, if that makes sense. Like, he felt incredibly sexually attracted to Stolas, and also felt comfortable in Stolas' embrace, and found himself enjoying being the center of Stolas' attention.
All these are things that would usually make him bolt out of a relationship. It's what sends his alarms off and makes him self-destruct. But because he can't do that with Stolas, he instead spends the better part of two seasons trying to force himself not to fall in love with Stolas. Trying to stomp out that stupid little flame of emotional longing that kept trying to grow in him. Sometimes it's easy (like when Stolas is being a "dick" in Blitz's eyes, eg. in LooLoo Land or at the Harvest Moon Festival), and others... Not so much.
Essentially, Blitz is too messed up inside (until the Full Moon - Sinsmas arc) to simply be "in love" with Stolas or with anyone else. But because he has to keep seeing Stolas and can't follow through with his usual self-fulfilled prophecy, he turns to the next best coping mechanism, which is complete and stubborn denial. "Nooooope, no feelings, just transactional sex!!!! If I say this really loudly really often I will convince everyone just as successfully as I've convinced myself!!!!!
And a big part of this is his grumbling and frowning and acting completely annoyed by Stolas' mere existence whenever Stolas is paying him attention. As you pointed out, this starts in Mission Zero, tooβBlitz doesn't grin until after he's flipped Stolas around on the desk and Stolas can't see his face. Similarly, in All 2 U (and in Stolas' phone pictures right before Stolas Sings) we see what Stolas sees when he looks at Blitz: that angry, grumpy, disinterested facade.
And that facade isn't there because Blitz genuinely dislikes Stolas. It's also not there because Blitz is secretly in love with Stolas and trying to hide it; not exactly. I'd say it's there because Blitz is trying really, really, really hard to force himself to dislike Stolas. Because that's the only way he has of guarding his heart while continuing to spend time with Stolas at least once a month. Because he can't bear to even entertain the thought of having something real with Stolas. That is simply outside of the realm of what he feels he deserves, and the mere mental image feels like a sick joke designed specifically to torture him.
In fact, I'd go as far as to say that, in those moments, what Blitz dislikes most about Stolas is that he can't help but like him. He's annoyed at himself because he wants to think of Stolas as a privileged asshole whom he's just using for the book, but no matter how hard he tries to convince himself and everyone else of that, the stupid little flame of longing just won't get the memo and leave him the fuck alone.
Actually I do have something to add: I think this is why blitz panics so badly when Stolas tries to give him the crystal. Because blitz does want to keep seeing Stolas, but without the crutch of the book, he has to acknowledge that he actually likes Stolas, which like OP said is what has led him to crash a relationship in the past (AKA real feelings). Obviously this is something we all knew about Full Moon/Apology Tour already but I think it's especially interesting in the context of this analysis

100%!
The idea that Blitz feels guilty is very interesting!
You could definitely interpret Blitz' actions in this scene as him caring for Stolas and feeling guilty for stealing from him and ruining his marriage : P I think Blitz definitely feels very guilty in sinsmas.
@blitzwhore
Yes, I do agree with you that Blitz wouldn't have been love with Stolas yet, its just that my inner monologue when I was watching the ep happened to be, "Oh I think he's in love with him." I should have been clearer about that when I wrote the essay.
And I do think your right, that in the show Blitz is trying really hard not to like stolas or get attached to him, because entertaining that idea of them having a relationship would be too painful for him for multiple reasons. And I do think that perhaps that dynamic comes into play here in this scene, such as Blitz running away from Stolas in bed, and him trying really hard to resist having sex with him before finally caving in "fine, you win. >: (" π Classic tsundere.
@kityana
You bring up an excellent point about Blitz apologising to Stolas here. I also always found Blitz' apology here odd. It feels genuinely very out of character for Mr """I've-always-been-real-shit-at-sorrys-kay?-There-for-pussies-and-no-one-fucking-deserves-them-anyways"""
And I definitely do think you can interpret his apology to Stolas here as Blitz already sincerely cares about him. Blitz is definitely somebody who does not give a shit about you unless he considers you one of his friends or apart of his family. And it's very interesting that Stolas might have already reached that high status to him.
@tiredandanxi0us
Yes! I think there is a definite character arc of Blitz going from only staying in a relationship with Stolas for the book (101), to the book being an excuse to have a relationship with him (208), to Blitz choosing to stay with Stolas despite no book binding them together. (212)
I was rewatching the ep a few days ago, again XD And I discovered something VERY interesting that I really wanted to share! I felt like a archeologist who discovered a new dinosaur skeleton LOL.
When Stolas says "I suppose as long as you have it, we'll be sure to see each other again! Now won't we?"
He touches Blitz' pendant!
The next time this happens is this moment in Unhappy Campers (205)
Barbie: Just cuz I'm outta rehab doesn't mean I wanna see you, I never wanna see you, ever!
And we know that the implication is that Barbie doesn't want to see Blitz because she blames him for their Mums death.
And also the pendant is clearly supposed to represent Blitz' grief and guilt over his mums death. It holds a lot of significance narratively.
Also the pendant is clearly supposed to be his Mums eye? Or something like that?
(my poor baby π)
Anyways, when I noticed that... I was like... oh shit! 0o0
And this is a purposeful artistic decision. In animation, everything is very deliberate, because like, drawing and animation takes a lot of effort and time. The storyboarder can't like, accidently drop their pen on the tablet and draw that LOL.
I just feel like this is really significant!
So yeah! I really do think that this moment is likely intended to be about Blitz' fear with intimacy, self loathing and commitment issues.
I do have this theory that needs more evidence before I feel comfortable 100% standing by it, but I feel like one of the reasons Blitz fell in love with Stolas is because he reminds him of his mother! When I noticed that, the show now drawing a deliberate connection between Stolas and Blitz' mum, i was like, 'oh my god I feel so validated!'
Maybe Blitz was like, "OH GOD I CAN'T RUIN HIM TOO!" or like, "AHHH! HES SO PRETTY FUCK!" or like, "OH SHIT, MY MUM!!" or something, idk XD
For fun, this frame of Stolas reminds me of this illustration from league of legends btw just thought that would be fun to share XD
