A year ago today I went out for a walk with my dad We carried everything on our backs Every morning we'd wake up and shake the chill from our bones See if our water bottles had frozen Every day we'd hike along a thin ribbon of trail and listen to the dirt crunching beneath our feet And the wind And our breathing Dreamed about pizza and chicken tenders Dreamed about the stars Every day we became stronger Our muscles more defined It became easier to lift our packs Every night we'd blow warm air on our hands while we waited for the hot water to boil for our dinner We crossed a mountain range Walked until our feet were a mess of calluses And then walked some more We walked with whispers of deer And saw bears And a bald eagle We saw things that others could never hope to see Because we dared to leave the beaten path

A year ago today I went out for a walk with my dad It took some time to get to the end And it was the best thing I ever did.
