REVIEW - STAGES OF THE HEART by Jo Goodman "humorous banter, tragedy & enjoyable romance"
Her Defiant Heart by Jo Goodman
Marshall Brothers #1
Thank you to eBook Discovery for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
And, this is not an easy book to write a review for. Some facts I considered when writing my review:
*The writing is excellent.
*The characters are well drawn and fully developed.
*The story is well plotted
*There is drama, intrigue, romance, sex, abuse and more.
*There is a HEA
*The set up for book two in the series is well handled.
*The story was originally published under the title “Midnight Princess” in 1989.
*It was dark and disturbing at times.
*There were lighter happier moments.
If you are looking for a lighthearted historical romance this is not the book for you. If you have abuse/rape triggers this is not the book for you. If you like a provocative and sometimes disturbing historical romance that takes a look at how horrible some mental institutions were in the past, how controlling some men can be and how valiant, strong and defiant a woman is able to be when she is threatened then this is the book for you.

My Heart’s Desire by Jo Goodman
The Dennehy Sisters #2
Interesting story – Two men arrive in New York to protect a woman from escaped convicts. Ethan is already in love with Mary Michael, one of five sisters (first book), and the sister has a twin. The second man, Jarrett, seems to be a man only interested in money and when he sees an opportunity to make some does so by doing Mary Renee’s father’s bidding by preventing her marriage to Hollis.
From that point on things happen. There are fights, injuries, train wrecks, marriages, evil men, murder, work to be done and quite a bit of romance. Jarrett and Renee do not have an easy relationship and strike sparks most of the time – if one is not cantankerous the other probably will be. This has plenty of steam, interesting characters, time in the city and on the trail, a villain to uncover and a plot that twists and turns and a HEA ending.
I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for my honest review.

Shared by Dear Author:
Let Me Be The One by Jo Goodman, historical, Compass Club #1, $0.99 “A lady with unusual connections, Elizabeth Penrose is wise, witty, beautiful, and quite determined to remain alone. Brendan Hampton, Earl of Northam, also known as North, is pursuing a jewel thief with the help of his three boon companions: South, East, and West—The Compass Club. Then North is accused of being the very thief he is seeking and Lady Elizabeth steps forward with an alibi, one that necessitates a hasty marriage. Their lives thoroughly complicated by secrets, Libby must make a harrowing choice: trust her husband, or lose him forever.”
The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black, fantasy, standalone, $3.99 Note: This book probably has less romance, but it’s a DABWAHA pick, so I’m including it. “In the woods is a glass coffin. It rests on the ground, and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives… Hazel and her brother, Ben, live in Fairfold, where humans and the Folk exist side by side. Since they were children, Hazel and Ben have been telling each other stories about the boy in the glass coffin. But as Hazel grows up, she puts aside those stories. Hazel knows the horned boy will never wake. Until one day, he does… As the world turns upside down, Hazel has to become the knight she once pretended to be. But as she’s swept up in new love, with shifting loyalties and the fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough?”

SEAL of Honor by Tonya Burrows, romantic suspense, HORNET #1, $0.99 “It’s a good thing Gabe Bristow lives and breathes the Navy SEAL credo, “the only easy day was yesterday,” because today, his life is unrecognizable. When his prestigious career comes to a crashing halt, he’s left with a bum leg and few prospects for employment. That is, until he’s offered the chance to command a private hostage rescue team. It seems like a good deal—until he meets his new team: a drunk Cajun linguist, a boy-genius CIA threat analyst, an FBI negotiator with mob ties, a cowboy medic, and an EOD expert as volatile as the bombs he defuses. Oh, and who could forget the sexy, frustratingly impulsive Audrey Van Amee? She’s determined to help rescue her brother—or drive Gabe crazy. Whichever comes first.”
Fighting for Devlin by Jessica Lemmon, contemporary/new adult, Lost Boys #1, $0.99 “Devlin Calvary makes his own luck. Orphaned as a young child, he was taken in by a crew of bookies and gamblers—and they became his family. They’re the reason Dev’s running a trendy bistro, living in a high rise, and enjoying the good life with a string of women who never ask for too much. Until, one night, he finds out how much it hurts to trust the wrong people. Rena Lewis sticks to the straight and narrow, determined not to slip up again . . . like the terrible night of partying four years ago that ended in tragedy. A waitress at Oak & Sage, she knows that sleeping with her boss is not a smart move. But when Dev shows up on her doorstep, beat up and clearly shaken, Rena’s not about to turn him down . . . or kick him out of bed.”
A Bride in the Bargain by Deeanne Gist, inspirational, standalone, $1.99 “In 1860s Seattle, a man with a wife could secure himself 640 acres of timberland. But because of his wife’s untimely death, Joe Denton finds himself about to lose half of his claim. Still in mourning, his best solution is to buy one of those Mercer girls arriving from the East. A woman he’ll marry in name but keep around mostly as a cook. Anna Ivey’s journey west with Asa Mercer’s girls is an escape from the griefs of her past. She’s not supposed to be a bride, though, just a cook for the girls. But when they land, she’s handed to Joe Denton and the two find themselves in a knotty situation. She refuses to wed him and he’s about to lose his land. With only a few months left, can Joe convince this provoking–but beguiling–easterner to be his bride?”
..., it was not lost that she felt, but a loss. She could have found her way back from one, but she grieved the other.
In Want of a Wife, Jo Goodman
A sense of humor is perhaps a man's most attractive feature. After the size of his... bank account.
