personality: while some might jo a loner, those that have taken the time know that beneath that sometimes gruff and sarcastic exterior lies a teddy bear with a heart of gold. for jo, family is everything. there isn’t much they wouldn’t do for the people closest to them. an introvert, jo spends a great deal of their free time recharging in nature - whether that’s a fishing trip, coaching their nephew’s baseball team, or mowing their mom’s lawn. they aren’t an expert in small talk, but if you ask the right questions they’ll have a lot to say about the important stuff.

Despite being born in a crowded hospital waiting room in Miami, Merrock has always been Jo’s home. Frustrated with a job that provided no room for growth, Alberto packed up his family and moved them up north when Jo was barely two years old -- leaving behind warm weather and the comfort of family for the promise of better opportunities and a brighter future for his family. It was a risk, putting all of their life savings in a mom and pop store, but it was one that would eventually pay with a lot of work and late nights working the till. In many ways Jo and Berto’s Corner grew up right along side each other -- hitting peaks and valleys at the same time -- and Jo often referred to the shop as their favorite sister. Something their three human sisters took great offence to.
Even at the best of times, with four children to support money was tight for the but Berto was determined to give them every opportunity - so they had to scrimp in other ways. Clipping coupons, searching out sales and purchasing a house that’s size was not ideal for a family their size. Six people packed into a two-bedroom home was more than a full house - but they made do. And whenever one of his children complained, Berto liked to remind them one day they’d look back on this time fondly, that surrounded by family was a gift -- but for Jo, it just felt crowded. So, while their sisters stayed in pouring over Tiger Beat magazines and learning the latest dance craze, Jo was outside with their friends - staining every pair of jeans they owned and skinning elbows playing pick up sports and hide and seek with the other neighborhood kids.
This love of the great outdoors and active hobbies followed them into high school as they found themself drawn to the jocks and the varsity sports teams. And the cheerleaders. But it was one cheerleader in particular, that would change the course of their whole life. Abigail. The two were immediately drawn to each other and it quickly occurred to them that Abigail wasn’t like any of their other friends. They were closer than friends. It wasn’t long before the pair were kissing under bleachers and holding hands under tables in the cafeteria. They were young and naïve, but Jo was sure their love was indestructible. And it was... to a point. But when Abigail’s father walked in on the couple canoodling in their bedroom during one of their ‘friendly’ sleepovers, that love shattered. The resulting screaming match knocked the wind right out of Jo, but it was the break up that followed that would haunt them for years.
Abi was quick to cover her tracks -- telling Jo it was just a phase and their friends that Jo had pursued her relentlessly. Before they could even catch their breath, the rumors started. And once they’d made their way around the school, Jo’s sisters confronted them. An ultimatum was given: either Jo could tell their parents about Abi, or they would. For a week their heart lived in their throat -- they couldn’t eat or sleep, ruled by the anxiety of losing their family -- but in the end, they confronted their fears. And though their parents initially struggled with the news, both would eventually come to accept them, and that was everything. While high school remained a challenge for Jo, they would go on to credit those years for making them the strong person they’d grew into.
It’s also what gave them the courage to set out and carve their own path, taking a year after graduation to travel the United States -- working when they needed to and camping in as many national parks as they could. Eventually, they settled in the San Fransisco bay area and studied culinary arts.
They lived there eight years before they got the call -- their father was sick. Within a week they’d packed up their one-bedroom and were heading back east, leaving the life they’d built (and the people in it) behind. There was no time to settle back into their childhood room, not with slack to pick up around the shop and mom needing help carting their father to doctor’s appointments. Their father passed within a year, but in that time their mother had grown to rely so heavily on their support Jo knew they had to stay.
The expectation that Jo would take over the family business was obvious in the way their family looked to them for guidance. The only problem was that Jo’s passion was in the kitchen not in peddling penny candies to the local kids. So, Jo did what their father would do -- they bet on themself and poured their savings into renovating the shop into a diner. When they’re not working overtime at the diner, or becoming one with nature, they spend the majority of their free time taking care of their mother, even making her dinner every Sunday night.
