I hate that one's worth, health, success, and progress in life seems largely deemed by one's having of a job.
Feeling low? Get a job!
Finding it hard to find friends? Get a job!
Unexplained symptoms/struggling with your disability? Get a job!
Feeling bored? Get a job!
Disability symptoms making you feel tired, exhausted, fatigued? Get a job!
Feeling as though the world is not your oyster? Get a job!
Feeling left out? Get a job!
Well done, you got a volunteer position at a charity/community organisation that supports causes you deeply care about that helps others. Now get a real job!
Not sure what you want to achieve in life? Get a job!
Having fun exploring your hobbies? Skills? Well you can't do that forever, get a job!
Burnt out from doing two degrees? Get a job!
Unsure what career path to take? Unsure what interests you? Well get a job anyway!
Struggling with chronic pain? Get a job!
Not sleeping well? You need routine. Get a job!
Still living at home because the cost of living is high and you have no partner or friends to live with? Get ANOTHER JOB!
The list goes on and onnn and onnnnnn.
SHUT UP!
My worth is not defined by having a job. The world is not my oyster. I will not be cured of my disabilities, my tiredness, my loneliness, my uncertainty by just having a job. There is SO much more to life than a job. Yes, it can be a gateway to certain things, and an accessible job with flexible and understanding colleagues can be groundbreaking, but it does not cure. If anything, especially if one is disabled, it can cause more damage - particularly if done wrong (i.e, for example, if someone cannot stand for long periods of time, they should not be forced into a bar job where they have to stand for 7 hours straight).
So sick of hearing it. 'Get a job' is not the answer to living a happy life.
