JOB SEARCH TIP ‘Networking Via Social Media’:
More and more these days employers are going to job search sites to find you. Post your resume and profile on as many sites as you can and update and check in on them as often as you can.
Get onto linkedin (https://au.linkedin.com/) ‘right now’ create a profile and start networking, get involved in an industry related community. Use this platform to involve yourself in industry related questions and answers, participate in conversations relative to your industry so that you can be seen as a knowledgeable resource. This then becomes a community that will help you find a job, often before it is even posted.
Social media is a great way to network and you know what they say “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. Use twitter (https://twitter.com) feed to make reference to and comment on industry trends, follow the companies you want to work for on these social media sites and others, to be alerted to possible opportunities before they even arise. When companies report changes growth, retirements, etc. this often indicates new employment opportunities opening soon. Use this time to get your foot in the door and get noticed by approaching the people at the top with ‘congratulations for the change/expansion etc. and showing how you are perfect for the roles opening up’.
