There is SUCH a contrast between Eda and Luz vs Belos and Hunter in this episode. It cuts straight from Eda getting Luz palismen wood and reassuring her to Hunter literally bowing in front of Belos on his throne.

REALLY fucked up how difficult it is for someone in Eda’s situation (no magic, no coven) to survive. There’s so few jobs for them, no real way to support themselves and few people seem sympathetic.

When it comes down to it, Emperor Belos is someone who was unable to move past his biases, trauma and abandonment issues with his brother but instead of finding a community of weirdos like Luz, Eda, Hunter, etc. did for support, he passed all that hurt onto others again and again and again.

Just look at the way he treated Caleb and the grimwalkers! He could’ve talked things out with Caleb and maybe even found a new family with him and Evelyn, but he instead killed Caleb over and over and over again. He continued to eventually raise “his brother” and abuse him until he “betrayed” him again and we see the effects of it in Hunter.

It makes me think about how both he and Caleb were raised in a puritan colony and how that affected them both (becoming witch hunters, etc.) but the choices Phillip continued to make in dehumanizing others is what sets him apart as the villain.
