Escaping Kai and Meeting the Crew
Kai Masterlist
this is long so under the cut it goes!
Word had gotten around pretty quickly about the mermaid that had flopped on deck. After all, the Calypso’s Wrath was just one pirate ship. Everyone knew about Kai’s treasure by lunchtime.
There came a knock on the captain’s door.
“May I come in, Miss Mermaid?” a deep voice called.
The voice sounded strangely polite. Still, Y/N made no attempt to answer.
“Er, Captain says you’ve gotta eat,” the voice continued, “I can’t let ya go hungry, so I s’pose I’m coming in!”
Y/N flinched as the door swung open. A tall, buff man strode in carrying a tray. He had muscles like boulders, and half of his head was shaved. The other half was long and had been braided, albeit in a messy fashion. He had a thin beard and scars littered his skin. He wore overalls and many piercings. Despite his hulking appearance, his eyes appeared kind.
“Er, do ya eat it under the water or over the water?” he asked.
“I…um,” Y/N gulped, “above the water.”
The man looked around briefly, then shrugged.
“I don’ think Captain Nelson will be happy if I put his table in yer tank,” he said, “it’ll get wet. Probably won’t fit too good either.”
The gears started turning in Y/N’s head.
“Um, you know,” she started, “if you dry me off then I could just sit at the table outside the tank.”
“You won’t shrivel up if I do that, will you?” he asked, his brows creased.
Y/N shook her head.
“I’ll be fine.”
“Well, alrighty then!” he said, “the captain’ll be pleased we got that sorted!”
He gently scooped her out of the tank and began drying her off with some nearby linens. Soon enough, Y/N could feel the transformation reversing. The webbing on her ears receded, and her tail split, its brilliant color fading back into the shade of her skin. The man looked on in awe.
“I didn’t know you could do that!” he exclaimed.
“Shhh!” Y/N put a finger to her lips.
“Please, Mr…?”
“Jodocus. Well, my first name is Jodocus. I don’t have a last name, on account of not knowing it-”
“Jodocus,” Y/N interjected, “let’s keep this between us.”
“Why?” he asked.
“Because… I am self-conscious about it.”
It wasn’t a total lie- she was technically self-conscious about the whole thing. But she was more embarrassed about the fish tail rather than her legs she was born with.
“Oh,” Jodocus said, “I’m sorry, Miss. I meant no disrespect. Should I avert my eyes?”
Y/N was covered in linens, but she became aware of the fact that she hadn’t any clothes on below her waist.
“Yes, and, uh, could I trouble you for some trousers?”
Jodocus nodded quickly. He left the cabin for just a few minutes and returned shortly with some clothes.
Y/N slid into the pants Jodocus brought for her. They were pretty big on her, and she had to wear a belt to keep them up. He had also brought some boots, which were surprisingly close to her size. She slipped on an off-white blouse over her bralette as well.
“Right.” Jodocus turned once he was sure she was decent, “now about your lunch- miss mermaid!?”
…
Y/N kept her head down, having swiped one of Kai’s hats from a hook in his cabin. The ship was full of hustle and bustle. She just needed to get to the railing, and then she could jump off to freedom.
She almost bumped into a barrel someone was carrying. A woman with flaming red hair was on deck, spouting orders to the crew.
“And let’s have no killing of albatrosses today, Samuel! You remember what happened last time!”
Y/N shook her head and kept moving.
“Oi!”
There was a firm hand on her shoulder. Y/N stiffened, not daring to turn around.
Unfortunately the hand’s owner overturned that decision. Y/N was whirled around. She kept her face obscured and stared at the unmistakable coat and boots of Kai.
“Is there a problem, Captain?” Y/N asked in the deepest voice she could muster.
Seriously!? She cursed herself, he’s never going to buy that!
“That depends. I don’t take kindly to stow-aways,” he said.
He lifted her hat.
“And I don’t take kindly to desertion either,” he added darkly, “Adriana!”
The red-haired woman crossed the deck to them.
“Captain?” she asked.
“See to it that Miss Y/N is back in her tank,” he said, “preferably with fins. And for the love of the sea, don’t leave Jodocus alone with her again.”
“Aye, Captain.”
Adriana took Y/N by the wrist and began to drag her back. Y/N started to struggle, but Kai gripped her by the arm.
“Is there anything else I should know, Y/N?” he asked, “can you control your switching from fins to feet or is it of a more unpredictable nature?”
Y/N’s lower lip trembled, but she refused to let him see her cry.
“Answer the captain!” Adriana demanded.
“That’ll do, Adriana,” Kai said suddenly, “there’s been enough excitement for our fish today. Get her back in my quarters and find out how she grew those.”
He gestured to her legs. Adriana nodded then took Y/N, kicking and screaming, back to the room.
Once the cabin door was shut, Adriana rounded on her. She drew a dagger quick as lightning and held it to Y/N’s throat.
“You may have the captain spellbound, but if you keep making things difficult, I have no qualms about making some fish filets out of you. Got it?”
Y/N couldn’t nod for fear of the blade nicking her skin.
“Y-yes,” she breathed.
“Good,” Adriana said, lowering the knife, “now how do we get those pretty fins back?”
Y/N scrambled to come up with a good lie when Jodocus threw the door open.
“Miss Mermaid! You’re back!” he beamed.
“Jodocus, how did she transform?” Adriana asked.
Y/N shook her head at him. Jodocus nodded to her in a conspiratorial way.
“Well that’s the thing, Miss Adriana,” he said, “she’s self-conscious about it. I think it’d be improper to say.”
“Well lucky for Miss Y/N, I’m a woman, too. We can share these things with each other. I won’t breathe a word of it to the men.”
“Oh! In that case…”
Y/N face-palmed as Jodocus relayed how she had transformed.
“Hm,” Adriana smiled, turning back to Y/N, “so all our fish needs is water. Sounds obvious when it’s put that way. You can go now, Jodocus.”
“Ma’am.”
Jodocus waved at Y/N before leaving the cabin and closing the door behind him.
“Are you going to take those off like a good girl or am I going to have to cut them from you?” Adriana nodded to Y/N’s new clothes.
…
The shirt, trousers, and boots lay in a corner, while Y/N had been dumped back in her tank. Thankfully, Adriana had let her keep her old top from before her abduction.
“One more thing, Missy.”
Adriana slid a side table over beside the tank. Y/N’s lunch lay on top.
“It’s probably gone cold now, but you’ll manage. Don’t do anything fishy, Fishy.”
Y/N waited for her to leave, but she never did. Adriana realized what she was waiting for and let out a harsh cackle.
“You’ll get privacy privileges back when you don’t try to jump ship,” she said, “eat. I can always force it down your throat.”
Her hand took a roll in a vice-like grip. It took a while for her to be able to swallow the lump in her throat before she took a bite. The situation looked more and more hopeless with each passing second. How was she to get off of this cursed vessel now?
