Ya casi ni me acordaba del boogaloo, el latin soul, la música de los neoyorquinos latinos, el precedente sesentero de la salsa, en cierto modo su "garaje" por la sencillez de sus ritmos.

Hubo un tiempo (el del Siroco Soul Machine, años 90) en que me dejé atrapar por cosas como "I Like It Like That" de Pete Rodriguez, "Watermelon Man" de Mongo Santamaría, "Bang Bang" de Joe Cuba, y , por supuesto, por "El Nuevo Barretto" de Ray Barretto, música elemental pero excitante, cantada indistintamente en inglés o castellano, que ni siquiera gustaba mucho a las mismas disqueras que lo grababan y mantenían pero que tuvo su gracia y su momento. De ahí salieron varios de los futuros "reyes de la salsa" como Willie Colón o el propio Barretto.
