#student bodies#1981#american cinema#slasher film#horror film#comedy horror#films i done watched#mickey rose#kristen riter#matthew goldsby#jerry belson#joe flood#mimi weddell#carl jacobs#joe talarowski#peggy cooper#janice e. o'malley#angela bressler#sara eckhardt#cullen g. chambers#the comedy horror film is easily one of the hardest things to pull off. usually they fall down on the comedy by going gross out on the#horror. or else they go complete slapstick and forget the horror. i came into this with very low expectations because there have been so fe#comedy horrors that really worked. and this? this... kind of works! oh hey its not perfect. far from it. but it was a hell of a lot better#than i expected. drawing on tropes which were already becoming cliche and nodding at everything from halloween to prom night to#when a stranger calls. its genuinely quite funny which i wasn't expecting. the running onscreen commentary which points out whenever a door#is left unlocked or an obvious clue is dropped was unexpected but frequently very funny. there's some sharp jokes and a lot of stupid ones#it has the feel of something national lampoon would have done around this time. but it's also a genuine slasher film hitting all the right#notes and staying faithful enough to the genre that it makes it work. a very unexpectedly enjoyable bit of absolute nonsense#perhaps the most consistently funny horror comedy i've seen. sure it drops a little in the final fifteen minutes but gags are thick and fas#and range from the cerebral to the puerile (i wish i could say i didnt laugh at the farting corpse)
