When the hubs told me this year he wanted to expand his skills by sewing his costumes(last year he bought a Dremel and got real nuts in our guest room), I was like, oh Lawd, he wants me to be his go-to-guru. So the week of JoeLanta, he had me blow the dust of one of my sewing machines, set up my grandmother's sewing table, and give him a crash course on single-stitching. He came prepared with his own thread, fabric, interfacing, and needles(which he mistakenly thought went into the machine. I was like, 'baby those are, like, quilting needles...'). I was impressed by his preparation. But, like most things you only read about before you dive into, he sat down in front of the machine and went, "Uuuuh...". There were a couple of nights of him bellowing "Babyyyyy" in slight confusion or distress as he basically self taught the foundations of attaching two pieces of fabric with a threaded machine. Eventually, he got what he needed and completed his project.
He had massive and unnecessary seam allowances. Some of the pieces just didn't work out and he had to do a plan B. There are a few unintentional sock-like items that were off-shoots of his efforts. But what was YOUR first time sewing like? Mine was pretty terrible; my mother thought the yellow dress I sewed all Christmas day was fabulous, disregarding the fact I couldn't wear it afterward. But MY husband sewed AND worked it out that weekend!
