Using data from the Billboard R&B/Soul Charts throughout the years, chartologist Joel Whitburn has compiled the list of the ten biggest R&B Girl Groups in the history of music. I was actually somewhat surprised that my favorite of the ten landed as high as they did. Here's the list...what do you think?
SWV (Sisters With Voices)
There's no hiding my love for those Pointer girls from Oakland, CA (Ruth, June, Anita - and the forgotten Bonnie who ditched her sisters JUST before they really hit it big). But i must say, i was pretty shocked to see them ranked ahead of TLC and Destiny's Child. But 80's R&B/Dance belonged to the The Pointer Sisters every bit as much as the 90's did to TLC and the 00's did to Destiny's Child. Just a fun list any way you look at it.
SIDE NOTE: If you can get passed the outrageously awful outfits, the video of the Pointer Sisters medley is pretty damn amazing. Their vocal versatility truly is second to none - particularly in this LIVE performance. No lip syncing there. How they can go from Automatic to Fire to Jump (For My Love) so effortlessly is truly astonishing.
