“I’ll Never Match Heifetz!”
When Joe Morello realized that, his life changed dramatically. Up to that point, he'd seemed destined to become an outstanding violin soloist. Aged nine, he played the Mendelssohn concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, so it's safe to say he was a bit of a child prodigy.
Then, seven years later, he met the greatest violinist the world has ever seen. And that was that. Instantly, Morello understood that, no matter how hard he worked, he would never be able to match the insanely gorgeous sound Sascha Heifetz produced seemingly en passant. And at the age of 16, he dropped the fiddle and took up the drum.
A somewhat radical move perhaps - but whatever the world of classical music may have lost, jazz owes Joe Morello a debt of gratitude. His contributions to the Dave Brubeck Quartet are legend, and it wasn't hyperbole when RCA, on the cover of the first album he recorded under his own name, described him as "the drummer other drummers listen to".
"It's About Time" ((RCA Victor LSP-2486) was recorded in 1961 in New York, the city which never sleeps. It's therefore fitting perhaps that all 10 tracks on this disc deal with the subject of time. Here's Morello's take on Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye".
